- [Until now (2006-12-22), I have avoided creating a true profile (that is, writing a biography of myself) but have decided that I am (weakly) obligated, as an admin, to do so.]
I'm a long-time contributor called Oldak Quill. I made my first edit in March 2004 and have edited, with few gaps, since. My work on Wikipedia (and, more generally, within Wikimedia) lacks focus: I edit articles, perform grunt work, use my admin powers, initiate projects and spearhead initiatives.
In real life I'm an undergraduate at King's College London studying neuroscience. I tend to edit a very broad range of articles rather than channeling my energy into specific areas of the 'pedia. My areas of interest are in the sciences (particularly biology), history (particularly European history), the arts (particularly classical music and film), various modern subcultures (I've edited a lot of articles about piercings, for some reason), philosophy and linguistics.
I often find myself doing tedious grunt work (example: compiling lists) probably because it is easy.
I participate in the project because I enjoy the work and am committed to the ideals of free/libre content (since joining Wikimedia I have also become committed to FLOSS).
For a more personal biography (an exposition of my faults, really), see my OpenHuman page: http://openhuman.org/oldak Where Wikimedia has applied FLOSS ethic to factual content, OpenHuman aims to apply it to biography and profile. It will be interesting to see what else grows out of FLOSS.
