<nowiki> <nowiki>Sebastian Faulks has been able to respond positively throughout the years to the demands and problems of his readers and society.Among his literary productions are "Birdsong", "Charlotte Gray" and"On Green Dolphin Street". "On Greeen Dolphin Street" narrates in a captivating style the troubles, fears, dilemma's, problems and happiness of the main characters:Mary van der Linden, Charlie van der linden and Frank, the journalist.there is an implicit feeling of nostalgia in the novel.A nostalgia to the past when everything seemed possible and life was full of hope and expectations.this of course connotes also the idea of disillusion. The plight of women is also well illustrated in this particular novel. As Mary struggles to find a solution for her dilemma:choosing her family or her love? The end of ther novel , that ends tragically for frank and mary confirms in an indirect way the idea of destiny. It is as if the whole universe conspired together to prevent their coming together. Apart frm the personal problems , like drank, adultry and love the novel also deals with the theme of politics and concepts like democracy and freedom. The United States is portrayed from the beginnning as a territory facing problems. Both internal as well as external ones. The Civil Right Movement that causes some contreversy between the characters in the first chapter and the Cold War contribute to an unstable and threatening atmosphere. The citizens are living in fear of being questioned of having communist sympathies.Even the journalists are not given the freedom to speak. The concepts of freedom and democracy are thus questioned and doubted. It seems as if the novel indirectly compares the state of affairs in the'' democratic'' United States with the communist Russia. The American citizens are blackmailed(Charlie), driven to commit suicide(Frank's friend:Billy Foy) and deprived of their freedom of speech(Frank).</nowiki></nowiki>
