"Once in a Lifetime" is the first single from the album Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing by Keith Urban. The album was released November 2006.
The song entered the Billboard magazine Hot Country Songs at No. 17, the highest debut for a song since the magazine implemented the Broadcast Data System (BDS), a computerized system to detect actual airplay, in 1990. However, not long after it entered the Top 10, the song stalled in popularity and would spend a month at No. 6 before beginning its fall from the chart. "Once in a Lifetime" broke a 9-month-old record held by Garth Brooks' "Good Ride Cowboy" (which entered at No. 18).[citation needed]
[edit] Commentary from Keith
ONCE IN A LIFETIME (John Shanks, Keith Urban): You have to write about where you are in life and you need to tell the truth. I don’t keep journals, so I tend to write in the moment. Then, once the music comes, the accompanying lyrics seem to flow. This was the case writing “Once In A Lifetime” with John Shanks. When I listened to the music it felt like it was about a guy who wants to state his intentions to his girl, to reaffirm things. It made the lyrics easy to write because it was exactly what I was feeling at that time in my life.
