Operation Archer is the Canadian Forces contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. It began in July 2005 with the deployment of a 220 member "theater activation team" to Kandahar. ^[1] Archer currently has 30 personnel assigned to it, and it is running in parallel with Operation Athena and Operation Argus.

The purpose of Operation Archer is the reconstruction of Afghanistan through the establishment of infrastructure, providing security, and assisting in training the Afghan National Army.

Operation Archer is politically controversial, both among activist groups and ministers of Parliament. On August 31, 2006, New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton called for the withdrawal of Canadian troops from the south of Afghanistan, to begin immediately and to be completed by February 2007. He argued that the mission lacked clear objectives and measures of success, and that the counter-insurgency operation is undermining reconstruction in Afghanistan.^[2]
