I'd really like to know why you felt it necessary to vandalize this article User:Rd232. Please explain what it is you would like to see here so that we can improve the Wikipedia. (User:KellyCoinGuy)

I felt that the material removed from this version was unsourced and not written in an encyclopedic way. Also its poor structure led me to believe there was some duplication; I was wrong on that. I added the cleanup tag to what was left because part of it is written in list form. In sum, please feel free to continue developing the article, but please give sources, and look at some of the featured articles on wikipedia to see the kind of writing style we aim at. Other than that, be bold. Regards, Rd232 20:20, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
If something is learned first hand, how does one reference it? Is it your opinion that first hand knowledge inappropriate for inclusion in Wikipedia? When you say "written in list form" are you referring to the paragraph headings? Or is there some other list you are referring to? I've been on Wikipedia for some time, and I thought I had a pretty good feel for how things are done around here. Nevertheless, I am willing to learn if you are willing to be patient with me. KellyCoinGuy 20:14, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
Unfortunately firsthand information falls foul of wikipedia:no original research. I don't recall what the list thing was about. Rd232 20:52, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
I revised some of the article to reflect more common language usage. While I acknowledge that some concepts can only be adequately expressed in large words, I felt that the article presented a problem to less sophisticated users and therefore decided to modify it. Thebt 03:49, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Ok, with Thebt's edits, the article seems to be cleaned up, so I removed the cleanup tag. If you add it back in, please be specific about what needs cleaning up here in the talk page. KellyCoinGuy 23:08, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

I don't think that links to rentacoder and the like are advertising on this specific page. Those sites give information very relavant to the subject matter. Would you take a link to Microsoft out of an article on Windows? KellyCoinGuy 23:08, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

I had to put the external links back in AGAIN... If you have a real justification for removing them, let's discuss it here. Otherwise, I'll just keep adding them back in from time to time. KellyCoinGuy 21:01, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

This article is Original Research, a revision of the "Article on Open Outsourcing" listed under External links. It is an essay that aims to advance a philosophy, rather than describe what is. Moreover it does not contain a precise definition of "open outsourcing". Perhaps it is

  • outsourcing enhancement of open source software
  • freelance developers leveraging open source tools in their solutions
  • a new portmanteau buzzphrase for "good" outsourcing

Most of the references relate more generally to online markets for freelance programmers. The latter is an interesting topic, on which this one depends, but it belongs in Freelancing_on_the_Internet, not here, and so do those references. 62.56.108.166 12:37, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

It helps in having a useful conversation to sign your note. In the event that you come back, here is the deal. Open outsourcing is a term used to describe business people contributing to open source by hiring programmers to contribute to open source. It is not "good" outsourcing, but rather outsourcing that enhances programs that are already open source. I'm not sure what a portmanteau buzzphrase is, but perhaps "portmanteau buzzphrase" is one. I'm not sure. If freelance developers leverage open source tools in their solutions, that is merely open source. Nothing different there. If business people hire developers to improve open source projects, and as a side effect get better programs with which to run their businesses, that is open outsourcing.
The term open outsourcing is an original term which I made up. However, the movement is something that I observed happening in the wild, not something that was created out of thin air. If there is another article in which this information would more comfortably live, we can talk about that, but when something has a name, it helps people talk about it. This is not original research, but it is an original name. I don't know precisely where that leaves this article in Wikipedia terms. KellyCoinGuy 23:50, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

That the title of the article is your term is surely a problem for Wikipedia. I see your point about naming something to provide a focus for discussion, but it is not the function of Wikipedia to promote neologisms. One of the referenced companies uses the phrase, but it's far from clear that they mean the same thing.

You have defined the subject as "business people contributing to open source by hiring programmers to contribute to open source", with "hiring" meaning via outsourcing. But the section on Real Examples admittedly provides no examples of this. The only reference that seems to relate to this definition is the open source bounty site, which is not mentioned in the text.

But the reason that this article does not belong here is WP:NOT#OR, specifically points 1, 2 and 3. The title is your creation, and though you disclaim it, your observations are indeed original research, because you can't reference them to prior publications. Any material about ways in which Open source software is developed should go in that article. Anything not about developing open source software should go in Freelancing on the Internet. 62.56.108.166 16:03, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
