Orestes (Ορεστης) is a Greek name, meaning "he who stands on the mountain", or "mountain-dweller".

In Greek Mythology, he is the son of Clytemnestra and Agamemnon. He had a sister Electra. Although Orestes led a noble life, he is infamous for avenging the murder of his father by killing his mother Clytemnestra, as well as her lover Aegisthus.
Atilla the Hun was known to have a honorable and loyal general named Orestes. He was considered in history to be a best friend of Atilla, and important advisor.
