From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ost battalions (from the German word Ost meaning "east") were battalions which fought in the Second World War, volunteers from captured Soviet soldiers and civilians.
Most of these soldiers were from North Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and the Muslim republics of the Soviet Union.
Those that fought in the Battle of Normandy were from the 243rd and 709th Static Infantry Divisions.
