Welcome to Ourai's philosophical musings. | ||
You have philosophies. I have philosophies. Jimbo Wales had a philosophy, and look where it got him. In any case, here are some of mine. I can not say that I covered everything, but most editors will probably not need any more than what I have given here (and if you do, ask away). Enjoy. |
Assuming you care (though I fail to see why most would), below you may find some philosophies of mine dealing with the Whole Sort of General Mish Mash I like to term life. Nothing terribly complex.

[edit] On my role
Wikipedia will always have several classes of articles, ranging from the extremely stable, core topics (like, you know, Earth) to the stubs. I surf often (though not as often as I would wish, what with schoolwork) and generally try to fix what I can. Trying to incorporate anything new into most pages would be folly most of the time, as the Wiki community keeps them pretty much on the bleeding edge; that's why I only contribute substance to articles which I know something about. Though I have been using and making minor contributions to Wikipedia for years now, I am not terribly well-acquainted with the higher levels of editing, nor with Wiki operating procedure. Oh, sure, I know how FAC works, or how ArbCom does its job, but I know no technicalities (but can and do look them up if needed). I figure that there will always be typos that need fixing and vandalism that needs reversion, so I will never be out of a job. They tell you to do what you love--being a Grammar Nazi, that shouldn't be too hard here. Even so, I would like to ingratiate myself with the community somewhat. It would be really cool to have Ourai recognized as well as Essjay, but it's not gonna happen anytime soon.
[edit] On vandalism
I really fail to understand why most vandalism occurs. Take, for example, a generic case where someone with IP 127.0.0.π adds some random fragment in the middle of an article that clearly has no business being there, say, an obscenity. What on Earth could the person possibly gain by doing so? It really isn't terribly funny, it will be reverted within maybe a minute, what with the Vandal Police and all applicable bots. This type of vandalism simply makes no sense.
I do understand, however, certain types of vandalism. In somme articles, say, Face of Mankind, an XORG in which I was active for some time, a user might add a line stating that members of, say, the Brotherhood are all gankers. Now, the person that did this might obviously have some sort of objection the the BoS--they might have been rendered permadead by Papa Mojo (notorious Brotherhood member), for example, and so they have motivation to edit. Though it is still vandalism, I can see why a person might attempt to use Wiki to flame someone in that manner.
Racism, sexism, and almost all other typed of discrimination, of course, are unacceptable under most any circumstances, with very few exceptions; that is why the -isms are the only exceptions in 3RR.
[edit] On content
I am an inclusionist when it comes to Wikipedia. I know that my particular beliefs go against Wiki policy, but I am entitled to them.
As far as I'm concerned, nothing is too minor a topic. Whenever I personally need to know something, the first place I look is Wikipedia. So when, for example, I was researching various StarCraft units' statistics to calculate how quickly and effectively one could rush, I looked to Wiki before hitting up Battle.net. Now, the reason I bring this up is that the StarCraft unit articles were all deleted in a mass AfD and set to redirect to their species (e.g. Valkyrie —> Terran). I abide by this decision, as it follows WP:NOT to the letter. But, in my personal opinion, the articles would have been better off kept and expanded. Why? Because I believe the information contained to be important—not to all, not to Wikipedia, true—but important nevertheless.
The thesis of my belief is that I think that Wikipedia should be a repository for all knowledge that people worldwide might wish to access. Ideally, in fact, I would support merging all Wiki-projects. Every Wiki-based encyclopedia (e.g. Halopedia (defunct), Memory Alpha, etc.) should be merged with Wiki to provide a single unified source of human knowledge. I know it is both excessive, improbable, not very feasable in the status quo, as well as a direct contradiction to large chunks of WP:NOT, but it is my vision. A body can dream.
[edit] On anything else
Should you care, I would be happy to describe, in detail, my opinion on pretty much anything, if, for some reason, you care to know; are you can probably tell by this sentence, for example, I not only do not mind absurdly long, but grammatically correct sentences, I use them quite often myself, despite the fact that the multiple commas, which, when used sparingly are pleasant enough, but when overused can irk even the least aggressive of editors, do kind of tend to get in the way of my meaning, again despite the fact that only one semicolon, the comma's big brother, of course, was used in this paragraph.
