[edit] Description
Owlbears are approximately eight to ten feet (2.5 - 3 meters) tall and resemble a cross between an owl and bear. Owlbears are carnivorous creatures famed for their aggression and ferocity; they live in mated pairs in caves and hunt in packs, attacking any creature bigger than a mouse.
The true (fictional) origin of the owlbear has never been revealed, but the various Monster Manual editions indicate it is probably the product of a wizard's experiments.
[edit] Creative origins
It is among the original monsters in Dungeons & Dragons and features in the earliest editions of Monster Manual.
[edit] Owlbears in other media

Various kinds of owlbears appear as mobs in the MMORPGs EverQuest, and EverQuest II.
Owlbears can be found in the roguelike computer games NetHack and ADOM.
[edit] Owlbears in the Warcraft Universe
They also appear as creeps in the real-time strategy game Warcraft III under the name Wildkin[1].
In World of Warcraft, these owlbears go by many names, including moonkin and wildkin. Players of the druid class that have chosen the balance talent path may shapeshift into a moonkin to better their offensive spell casting.
The wildkins are species of owlbears that were created to act as mortal guardians of the goddess Elune. Elune bestowed them the ability of magic. They have become feral since their creation, but they still retained their magical properties. Alliance players of World of Warcraft may acquire a quest to learn more about wildkin's history.[2]
