Ok, we need to reconcile a couple things. Was Pachomius a devotee of Palaemon or Anthony? Both the Coptic article and Butler's make no mention of Anthony. Also, Athanasius' Life of Antony makes no mention of Pachomius. Why wouldn't Athanasius have brought him up, given that they met? Also, what are we to take as the number of monks and monasteries existing when he died? Butler's says there were 3000 monks in 9 monasteries at that time. Carl.bunderson 15:58, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, the article doesnt say he was a devotee of Anthony or Palaemon. Anthony was famous in his day, everyone knew him and he was the model that everyone followed. But Anthony had no students (student/teacher relationship), he was solitary, he had immitators. It may be controversial who Pachomius was a devotee of, looking at the Catholic Encylopedia article there seem to be various opinions.
The numbers are from a course taught by Kenneth W. Harl from The Teaching Company in which he says "..by one count". Also Harl on the question of who he was a devotee of only says "he came into contact with a number of important ascetics". -- Stbalbach 16:33, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
