Palakunnathu Mathews Mar Athanasios was the founder of the modern-day Marthoma Syrian Church.
He became convinced of the need for reform within the Syriac Church, having been influenced by the Anglican missions sent by the British rulers. Since his views were seen as radical by a sizeable section of the Church, he lost his pontifical status and had to retreat to his home parish of Maramon. In the course of time, the section of the community that stuck with him evolved into the Mar Thoma Church.
