Palmerstown
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Palmerstown (Irish: Baile Phámar) is an area of Dublin, Ireland located to the west of the city.
The area is situated near a major junction of the M50 motorway (running from north to south) and N4 road (passing east to west). Prior to construction of the N4 (which now acts as the main arterial road for traffic entering and exiting Dublin city to and from the west) the Old Lucan Road was the main thoroughfare into the city from the west, and it passes through Palmerstown village. The area is bordered in the south and southeast by Ballyfermot, in the west by Clondalkin and Lucan, and in the east by the village of Chapelizod.
Palmerstown is situated near the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, which lies on the opposite side of the M50 to Palmerstown and takes it's name from the picturesque Liffey valley which lies nearby.
Stewarts Hospital, which provides care to people with intellectual disabilities is located just outside Palmerstown village. The impressive hospital building which overlooks the Liffey valley is also an administrative centre for the Health Services Executive (HSE), which is responsible for providing health and personal social services to Irish people. Stewarts Hospital also has a small school for people with intellectual disabilities, and has a Sports and Leisure centre for the general public that also hosts a summer camp every year.
While the village is located north of the N4 dual carriageway, the majority of the population of Palmerstown live on the south side, where there are several extensive housing estates and the main local shopping and amenities centre.
Locals refer to the areas within Palmerstown as: The Village, which contains Robin Villas, and Hollyville. Then there is "old Palmerstown", which is a misnomer, it was build mostly between 1955 and 1965. This area contains some local shops, a Dry Cleaners, Health Centre, News Agents, a Chinese Take Away, an Indian Take Away, a local Mace chain shop, Kellys Pork Butchers, and Gray's Beef Butchers. A hairdresser or two, Reyonald's Pharamacy, A company who deal with entry exit systems. The local Credit Union, and one of three doctors surgerys. There is also Woodfarm Acres, developed in the 1970s this area is bounded by the M50 and N4 Junction and the local cemetery. Between Kennelsfort Road Lower and the M50 there is a shopping centre, with a medium sized Supervalu, a bowling alley, car parts shop, a newsagent, a hair dressers, a barbers, a Chinese takeaway, a "chipper", and a pizza / dinner, an estate agent, a Chinese takeaway, a dry cleaners, a pharmacy. There are some houses north of shopping centre between the cemetery and Woodfarm Acres. There is a doctors surgery on the corner of this road. Across the road from the shopping centre there is a public house and a petrol station. Heading further south along Kennelsfort Road, we find a second level school, passing by this on we find two more shops one is a Chinese take away and the other is a pizza delivery service.
This is followed by Cherry Orchard Industrial Estate.
To the rear of the kennelsfort petrol station and the school there is the Oakcourt housing estate. This was build in the late 1970s, it was further developed in the 1990s with the addition of three extra roads, called Glenaulin.
