Patuxent High School is a comprehensive, four-year high school. The school is located in the southern portion of Calvert County , with proximity to the greater Washington D.C. area, Annapolis and Patuxent Naval Air Station.
The faculty consists of 78 certified teachers. There are 4 full time vice principals and 4 guidance counselors. There are 3 secretaries and a full-time nurse and registrar.
Working as partners with parents and the community, the faculty and staff of Patuxent High School will help students acquire the essential life skills and core knowledge necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing and increasingly complex, technology-driven society.
The present number of students is 1382. The senior class is comprised of 330 students. Patuxent students come from various social economic backgrounds and ethnic groups. We draw from the communities of Cove Point, the Chesapeake Ranch Estates, Drum Point and Solomons. In 2003 Congressman Steny H. Hoyer recognized Patuxent for being ranked among the nation's top 700 most demanding public schools as reported by Newsweek. In April of 2005 Jay Mathews of the Washington Post rated Patuxent as one of the top 30 most exceptional public schools in the region. Patuxent High is recognized as the highest ranked school in Calvert County in the Advanced Placement Program offered by College Board. Calvert County is the highest ranked county in Maryland and Maryland is the highest ranked state in the nation.
Patuxent is a 2A school that competes in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference(SMAC). In 2007 the Patuxent Boys Soccer team won the SMAC chapionship and County Cup.
The Patuxent High School NJROTC placed third at its AREA 5 Regional Competition on March 16th and 17th 2007. The Company has been awarded as well as earned numerous other awards. In 2006 the Company won its Regional Competition and placed first in the Nation in Armed and Unarmed Standard Drill at Navy Nationals at NAS Pensacola. The Units Orienteering team placed First in the Nation in JROTC Compettion in 2003.
