[edit] Re: Nubbie44

I've removed him from WP:AIV for now since I'm not sure a block is warranted just yet since he seems to have stopped, but I will keep an eye on him for a few minutes, if he starts up again plese relist. Thanks --pgk(talk) 22:09, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Interlanguage links

Cool talk page. I noticed you removed an interlanguage link from Chuck Norris. pl:Article adds a link on the left TOC to the article's page on the Polish Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Interlanguage_links for more info. Mrtea (talk) 00:04, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chuck

That's okay. It was a minor oversight. -R. fiend 06:32, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

[I moved this from User talk:Pattersonci to your talk page. I think it was put there accidently and meant for you. Mrtea (talk) 00:21, 27 January 2006 (UTC)]

  • It was for me. Thank you for catchign that and posting it here. Pattersonc 01:40, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chuck Norris Facts

Hi. You recently reverted my edit to Chuck Norris Facts, marking it as vandalism. In case you don't remember, I changed the link http://chucknorrisfacts.com/ to http://www.4q.cc/chuck/ . I'd like to point out to you that not only is the latter link higher in importance on a Google search for "chuck norris facts" than is the first link, but furthermore the first link is not even valid any longer. At least in my case, I get an HTTP 403 Forbidden. I believe that your revert was based on a lack of information rather than a serious disagreement with my reasons for the edit, so I will reinstate said edit one time. Please notify me if you have any other concerns regarding this modification to the article. — flamingspinach | (talk) 01:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I just added both sites before I saw your message. I understand the argument for this, but the only definable proof on anything is that one has a DNS by the name of the article, which is quite valid. I have no problem with having both links on there. In fact, I could care less how many actual sites for Chuck are listed, i care only for accurate and complete data to be presented on Wikipedia. Do you have an isse with both sites being listed? Pattersonc 02:00, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
    • The registration of a domain name is hardly proof of legitimacy, as I'm sure you've heard of cybersquatting. Also, my understanding of the situation is as follows: 4q.cc is a user-contributions database wherein one can deposit one's own "Chuck Norris facts". chucknorrisfacts.com is a static page listing some such "facts", all of which are also existent at 4q.cc . The owner of 4q.cc claims that site to be the original source of the "facts" on the other site [1] whereas chucknorrisfacts.com seems to make no such claim. I am still getting a HTTP 403 on that site, by the way, and I had to use Wayback Machine to get at it. Hope my information is not out of date because of this. In light of this I'd prefer some renaming of the links you provided. The way they are presented currently seems to indicate a higher legitimacy of chucknorrisfacts.com, and I would prefer something more neutral - such as, perhaps, "list of Chuck Norris facts" for http://chucknorrisfacts.com/ and "database of Chuck Norris facts" for http://4q.cc/chuck/ . Is this acceptable? — flamingspinach | (talk) 02:23, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
      • I think you'd agree that there is a lot more important data besides some external links regarding one Internet Phenomenon that need attention. I will no longer edit the external links on the page in question. Pattersonc 02:30, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
        • Fair enough. I guess I just sort of took issue because I've never been accused of vandalism before :P I'm even a member of the CVU - by the way, I notice that on your userpage you say you are dedicated to vandal fighting, and yet you are not in Category:Counter Vandalism Unit Member/wikipedia/en - may I invite you to join us? I don't know how experienced you are at Wikipedia (for some reason neither Kate's nor Interiot's tool seems to work on your username), but if you're interested we have some pretty useful vandal-catching tools at our disposal. — flamingspinach | (talk) 02:45, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Wow! Thanks for the info. I added the CVU category to my category page and was aslo able to check my user status on the linsk you provided. I didn't know those existed. I am fairly new to editing Wikipedia. I'm a long term reader and recently felt it's about time to contrib to the community I frequent so very often. Pattersonc 02:55, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
    • (in response to the comment on my talk page) You are certainly most welcome. Check out the main WP:CVU page for more information on what the CVU does and how to participate (our IRC channel is a start). By the way, there is a reason that most Wikipedians put userboxes on their main userpages and not on subpages - that is because the userboxes often include category links that identify their containing page as members of that category. Currently User:Pattersonc/userbox is listed as a proud member of the English Wikipedia CVU community :P whereas the actual member would be User:Pattersonc, obviously. Just something to keep in mind. About the edit counters, make sure you don't succumb to Editcountitis! :) By the way, thanks for leaving a message on my talk page - it greatly simplifies matters to respond in kind on the other person's talk page because then they receive a pretty clear notification that they have a new message. Useful stuff to know. — flamingspinach | (talk) 03:14, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comments on Chuck Norris facts reverts

I put "false description" because a) "random fact generator" is not the "original" place of the facts, the SomethingAwful forums is, even by admission of 4q.cc, referenced below (although now that this is very popular, they claim to be the inventor of the phenomenon) Second, you stated chucknorrisfacts.com was nonfunctional. this is also not true. Tomservo3000 08:12, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Pasting a discussion on which site is "more authentic" than the other
From the "facts" article: Chuck Norris Facts were originally seen on IRC, and on websites like the Something Awful forums, in Spring 2005. While your site might be the original random fact generator, I don't think that the facts themselves are "owned" by anyone; it appears that they were a collaborative effort by anonymous and disparate individuals. OhnoitsJamieTalk 19:45, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
Agree with OhnoitsJamieTalk. 4q.cc is just a bunch of quotes collected from other places. From this interview with Ian Spector of 4q, about his "generator" websites: "Although Ian Spector maintains the site, approximately 90% of the "facts" are contributed by visitors – most of whom are either college students or stuck in a cubicle ... The website was spawned from a discussion thread on the massively popular internet forum, SomethingAwful.com" [2] Tomservo3000 03:52, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
I also agree with Ohnoitsjamie, however what site should be linked? Apparently the whois records of the sites show that 4q.cc was the original, so should it then be linked over the newer chucknorrisfacts.com? Still if it's essentially quotes copied from the somethingawful forums, then it probably just comes down to a matter of what site's easier and more helpful to the reader- probably what's listed right now, chucknorrisfacts.com. Ian's left me a message on my talk page and I told him we should keep the discussion here. Mrtea (talk) 07:04, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Agree with Mrtea. It appears that the WHOIS "created date" of chucknorrisfacts.com may not be accurate. It is possible the chucknorrisfacts.com address was transferred from another domain registrar and the date was "reset". If you check the WHOIS of a "copycat" site (chucknorrisfacts.net), it shows a created date several weeks "earlier" than chucknorrisfacts.com. It doesn't seem logical that someone would register the .net over the .com address. There's discussion of this subject here [3] Hamilton burr 08:56, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Hope the rv reasoning makes sense. Post here for discussion Tomservo3000 08:25, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for adding the approprioate text back to the sandbox. Clearly an oversight on my part. Pattersonc :: (Talk) 11:13 PM, Friday; January 27 2006 (EST)

Any time! :-) That was also perfect timing, since I changed my IP recently, so I wanted to test which IP I'm contributing from. — Alex 04:16, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Quarls nomination

Hey, I noticed you on Quarl's talk page. Although he's been reluctant I nominated him anyways... and I'm awaiting for his response... but feel free to vote and hopefully he'll accept Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Quarl .

[edit] Regarding SVGs

The mediawiki software automatically renders SVG's to PNGs to be displayed. You can render a vector image as big as you want. All users see the rendered version of the image, thus they dont need a SVG capable browser. I usually extract company logos from PDFs, (you can do that w/ Illustrator), I dont convert PNGs to SVGs, but you can (watch out for size, they add too many vertices).

[edit] Unblocking the auto-block

Hey there - User:Achille just got in touch with me to have your IP unblocked. As you probably know, creating the account User:Chip_off_the_ol'_█ triggered an automatic indefinite block of that account, and also a 24 hour block of the creating IP - which, I assume, was yours. :) The IP should be unblocked now, so you shouldn't have any problems with editing. If you do, feel free to get in touch. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 21:53, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

For whatever reason the admin i'm working w/ isnt willing to unblock the Chip account (he says he doesnt know why it was blocked). Eh, Curps must turn whatever script he's running off it's giving me headaches too. —This user has left wikipedia 22:05 2006-02-02
Curps unblocked the other accounts you created, you may now use em. ~ Cheers —This user has left wikipedia 00:08 2006-02-03

[edit] IMac iSight

Your recent edit asserts that the iSight in the new intel iMac is 1.2 megapixels, but the link you provide as a source doesn't mention this. In fact I couldn't find anywhere that states the resolution of this camera, so where are you getting the info from? Graham 07:00, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:RFA/Quarl

Hi Patterson, thanks for asking to nominate me to be an admin and then supporting my RFA, which succeeded. If I can ever improve or help in any way, please let me know! :) Quarl (talk) 2006-02-16 11:14Z

  • No problem you certainly deserve the honour. Pattersonc(Talk) 9:16 PM, Thursday; February 16 2006 (EST)

[edit] FIFA World Cup -- Today's Featured Article

Go for it. I'd do it myself, but I don't know how to nominate it. Please nominate it for the starting date of the tournament (9 June). Thanks! — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 22:05, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reminder...

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 21:28, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
