Grand Rapids Community College Art Gallery to House Permanent Collection by Artist Paul Collins: Opening is a Fundraiser for Art Gallery Endowment
September 21, 2004 Grand Rapids, MI –A new collection of the works of internationally acclaimed artist Paul Collins will be on permanent display at Grand Rapids Community College beginning September 29, 2004. That evening the college will hold a reception co-hosted by Sharron Reynolds and Dick DeVos to celebrate the gift of fourteen pieces to date, and to raise funds for the future of GRCC’s Art Gallery. Several paintings will also be on loan just for the evening, for guests to view.
The event, “An Evening With Paul Collins,” will begin at 6 PM with a preview at GRCC’s Art Gallery in the Main Building and move to the Heritage Restaurant in the Applied Technology Center at 7 PM for music, hands-on art activities and Collins print signings. International foods prepared by GRCC Culinary students and instructors reflecting Collins’ world travels will be served. The formal presentation of the collection will be made during this celebration.
Tickets to the event are $50 with proceeds going towards an endowment to support the gallery. At their September 20 board meeting, GRCC Trustees unanimously approved changing the gallery’s name to the GRCC Collins Art Gallery.
Collins says the idea for a permanent collection at a location that is accessible to the whole community as well as students was important to him “because art is everywhere in life and there should be a fusion of education and art.”
Tickets are available by calling The GRCC Foundation Office, 616.234.3939.
Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers both liberal arts and workforce development degrees, classes and workshops. Student enrollment on the urban campus for both credit and non-credit courses averages 25,000 per year.
