Paulette Bourgeois
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paulette Bourgeois (July 20, 1951) is a Canadian children's writer and creator of the children's literary character, Franklin the Turtle.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1974 with a B.Sc.
Her first book was Franklin in the Dark, published in 1986. She stated that she was inspired to write this book after watching an episode of M*A*S*H featuring the character Hawkeye Pierce (who has the middle name "Franklin"), who was afraid of a dark cave. She has written over 26 Franklin books (illustrated by Brenda Clark), but has retired from writing the series. It now continues mostly with releases spun off from the TV series, written by other authors. Her name sometimes appears on the cover of these releases, but this is incorrect --- her name is only used to promote the books. Check the title page inside for the correct information. The Franklin books are published by Scholastic and Kids Can Press.
She also has a series of books called "In My Neighborhood" featuring jobs including garbage collectors and police officers.
She is married to Ian Urquhart and has two children, Natalie and Gordon and lives in Toronto, Ontario.
In 2003 she was made a Member of the Order of Canada.
