First, may I ask how this assignment came to be. I was not expecting this. Thanks Hmains 21:14, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
See here, I was asked by User:David.Mestel to take over as he feels he can't do an effective job, because of a conflict with User:Rebecca on Talk:Psephos. If you feel I am not a suitable advocate for some reason I would be happy to find you another one. If not then, please brief me on the issue from your perspective. - Things have been quiet recently so I hoped to keep things that way. This peace, however, may not last as long as we hope.

[edit] summary
My WP work consists of category organization and copyediting existing articles. In the course of my copyedits, I find that most standalone year/month/day links serve no purpose. Looking at such links provides no useful context to the articles; the links are unnecessary; worse, they interfere with the reader who would waste time chasing down such useless links, obscuring the links of value. I unlink such year/month/day links. Rarely, does any other editor object or reinsert the links--with a few exceptions. Rebecca objects to the delinking of any standalone year/month/day, anytime, anywhere. By her light, all such links are to remain, apparently until, and if, she personally agrees to delink them. In pursuit of this goal, Rebecca periodically issues threats that she will revert all edits to the articles I work on, and periodically does such mass reverts, using Administrator tools available to her (for other purposes than this date-link edit war she conducts, I understand).
I am not alone in this. Rebecca more often targets User: Bobblewik than me and her actions have made Bobblewik into a virtual WP outlaw, with threats and actions of banning Bobblewik from WP from short periods of time to forever. This makes me very upset. I do not want to be in an outlaw position; I think I am helpful to WP and generally enjoy my WP editing--except when Rebecca is acting up and acting out.
I believe I am justified in the edits I perform and do not want to restricted from my work and definitely do not want be in any way controlled by Rebecca. Rebecca has been it very clear that she thinks she is correct in making her threats and performing her mass reverts and undertaking other punishment actions against editors who do not edit and behave as she would wish. Actually, if you follow the Rebecca talk page (now and in the past, including when she was Ambi) you can see that she behaves badly and uncivilly with anyone and everyone she disagrees with; fortunately for me, she has not resorted to her customary bad language when she issues her threats against me. Generally, no one (other admins) seems to know what to do with her.
This summarizes what I think. I do not know what you can do. Wish we could WP meet in better circumstances. Thanks in any case. Hmains 03:07, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] response to summary
- She seems to be refusing to respond to my questions, but it's not necessary for her to respond to resolve this. We are all required to behave with civility to each other, admins are not excepted from this rule. This is simple. If she is uncivil again, please let me know. (and please remain absolutely civil in your communications with User:Rebecca [and everyone else] as well) If she is uncivil, we will pursue corrective actions through appropriate procedures...User:Pedant
- The other issue is somewhat more complex: Some users feel that a link to the date itself is helpful to provide historical context, others feel that linked dates are a distraction, and that links which do not point to something of immediate relevance are harmful to the project. There seems to have been inadequate discussion among the community on the issue. This might take quite some time, effort and patience to work out. Are you committed to working on this part, given that it might take quite a bit of discussion to arrive at a suitable policy regarding what dates should be linked and what should not? If you are, I will be glad to guide you through the process.User:Pedant
- Either way, I think it would be most convenient for me to work with what happens from this point on, rather than dredge up the past. Would you feel comfortable with that? (ignoring the past conflict, and working with this as a fresh start?) If so, please contact me the moment anything new happens, such as reverting an edit, or acting uncivil.User:Pedant
- Meanwhile I would prefer if you avoid provoking a conflict, such as creating a mass of datelinking changes with no other editorial work, which would seem to me to weaken the case that you are acting in good faith to write, edit, and improve the encyclopedia. [edit] reply to response
- Regarding date policy: I am not sure that the current policy is so bad and do not have any alternative, reasonable suggestions. The current policy was put into place, maybe a year ago, after long unpleasant arguments among various parties. Basically, it was Rebecca and a few others against everyone else--she would absolutely never agree with anything that led to it being desirable to remove standalone date links, (such as year) and never agree to anything that might disallow her relinking dates (by whatever means). I had little to add to the debate then or now; it was all very mean--which I want no involvement with. Either you like date links everywhere or you do not; its seems like an ideology and not subject to reason--at least that's how the policy discussion went.
- Moving on is fine with me.
- I am not interested in mass delinking of dates and do not do so. I make more corrections to commas than dates (like 10 to 1), plus other copyedit work. Sometimes, it is true that the only improvement I am able to make to an article is to remove the date links, but that is after I have done my copyedit reading of every line.
- My only goal is be able to do my edits without always being in fear of what Rebecca will do next. So thanks for your offer and help.

[edit] new threats
I have received a new threat and reversions from User:Rebecca (maybe stalking me by watching my user discussion page)). Please see my talk page. Help please. Thanks Hmains 02:50, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
