The Public Ivies: America's Flagship Public Universities included Penn State among the "Public Ivies", public universities that purportedly offer an academic experience equivalent to that of Ivy League schools combined with affordably priced tuition.[1]
The 2006 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges gives Penn State - University Park an academic rating of 4.5 stars out of 5.[2]
Shanghai Jiao Tong University's 2006 Academic Ranking of World Universities ranks Penn State - University Park as the #34 university in the U.S. and the #42 university in the world.[3]

- In 2006, the Princeton Review ranked Penn State the #2 "party school" in the nation.[4]
- In its August 13, 2006, edition, Newsweek ranked Penn State 40th among the world's top 100 global institutions.[5]
- In its Sept. 2006 edition, Washington Monthly magazine cited the University as third nationally. Washington Monthly looked at indicators related to how universities benefit the nation.[6]
According to U.S. News Best Colleges 2006, Penn State nationally ranks:[7]
- 14th among doctoral programs at national universities (tied)
- 18th among undergraduate business programs (tied)
- 4th in supply chain management/logistics programs
- 18th among undergraduate engineering programs (tied)
According to U.S. News Best Graduate Schools 2007, Penn State ranks[7]
- 87th among the nations 190 law schools
- 19th among graduate engineering programs (tied)
- 3rd in industrial/manufacturing, 9th in nuclear, 9th in materials, 6th in agricultural (tied)
- 29th among schools of education (tied)
- 2nd in vocational/technical education, 3rd in higher education administration, and 6th in counseling/personnel services
The National Research Council (NRC) rated Penn State's Department of Geography #1 in the United States in 1995.[8][9]
A recent report indicated that Penn State's football program ranks 12th nationwide in terms of economic contributions to each program's university, athletic department, conference, and community. The report, based on ticket sales, sponsorships, football program expenses, athletic department expenses (non-football), shared conference profits, and county revenue figures during home football games, revealed that the Nittany Lions are presently worth roughly US$63 million.[10]
On January 24, 2007, the Sustainable Endowments Institute released a report grading 100 colleges in terms of endowment policies and efforts being made towards implementing campus sustainability initiatives. Penn State received a "C+" grade, with "A" grades in the subcategories of Administration and Food & Recycling. The University's report card cited the farm-to-college program and composting operations in place in the University's dining commons as strengths.[11][12][13]
