Peter Sidney Beagrie (born 28 November 1965 in Middlesbrough, England) is one of a small breed of traditional English 'left-wingers'. Dribbling and crossing were Peter's main attributes and he could shake off a defender with a drop of a shoulder. Even without the pace and agility of youth he still shows the ability to beat defenders quite easily. Being quite the set-piece specialist, Peter also shows the finishing, technique and composure to take a perfect penalty or free kick. Beagrie is also well-known for his acrobatic goal celebration routine.
Peter started his professional footballing career as an apprentice at Middlesbrough in 1983, having spent time at neighbouring non-league outfit Marske United previous to that. Another highlight of his career was gaining promotion to the Premiership whilst playing, arguably, the best football of his career with Bradford City. During his illustrious, nine-club career he made two appearances for the England B team and also played twice for the England under-21 side. He recently made his 750th footballing appearance and scored his 100th goal on his 40th birthday for his former club Scunthorpe United
Although well-loved by most of the teams he played for, Peter fell out of favour at Middlesbrough for being one of only two players (the other was then club captain Don O'Riordan) to cut ties with the club during infamous liquidation in 1986, despite being born in nearby Stockton-on-Tees[citation needed]. The 1986 squad contained names who went onto succeed at the very highest level, including Gary Pallister and Stuart Ripley.
Peter makes regular appearances on both Sky TV and terrestrial television. He appears alongside Andy Townsend on ITV's Soccer Night, and also appears on the football phone-in show You're On Sky Sports, usually on Monday nights. Peter has also made numerous appearances on the rather jovial Sky Sports programme Soccer AM and every time he is mentioned on the show Tim, Helen and other crew members rejoice with the phrase "Peter Beagrie is mint".
Beagrie left Scunthorpe United in June 2006, supposedly to concentrate on his media involvement – but on 11 July 2006 it was announced that the 40-year-old Beagrie had signed a one-year deal with Scunthorpe's local rivals, Grimsby Town. However, in October 2006, it was announced that Beagrie and Grimsby had agreed to terminate the contract. Beagrie's retirement from football was announced during the You're On Sky Sports programme on 30 October 2006. He is now expected to focus on his media career.
