Peter Paul Busuttil has been the Mayor of Hal Safi, Malta, Europe since 1994.
Busuttil became synonymous with the struggle of the people of Malta to obtain political freedom and liberty.
In 1986 Busuttil was accused of the murder of Raymond Caruana, a Nationalist activist after shots were fired towards the Nationalist Club of Gudja.
The socialist regime organised a frame up to instigate that Busuttil had committed the murder.
This was the worst period for democracy in Malta since independence of 1964. The events that took place after this episode led to the fall of the socialist regime and saw the birth of a new area of freedom and social liberty with the electoral victory of the Christian Democrat Partit Nazzjonalista in May of 1987.
