The PF Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon is an annual marathon foot-race held in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. This marathon is an Elite Racing (the same individuals who put on the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon of San Diego) Signature Event. It's inaugural year occurred in 2004. The event occurs annually on the Sunday before the day that the United States celebrates Martin Luther King Day. This event has a marathon and a half-marathon race, both commencing in the city of Tempe. The marathon does include a wheelchair race that occurs 10 minutes before the start of the foot race.
The marathon portion of the event begins on Washington Street in downtown Phoenix, while the half-marathon portion of the event begins one street south of Washington on Jefferson Street. The marathon runs through three cities in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. The three cities are Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. The 2007 race route was changed from the 2006 route due to Valley Metro Rail light rail construction being done in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Along the route are over 40 high school cheerleading teams and 70 bands who perform for the runners. Later in the evening there is a concert held in Tempe for all the runners and volunteers. The 2007 main event headliner was Arizona artist Gin Blossoms.
There were over 37,000 participants in the 2007 event, making this the largest marathon and half-marathon in the world. [1] The next PF Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon will occur on January 13, 2008.
