Piaf (play)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Piaf" is a biographical play about French chanteuse Edith Piaf. The play was written by Pam Gems. It debuted in London, and eventually came to Broadway in 1981 with its original star, British actress Jane Lapotaire, in the title role.
Piaf is portrayed in a most unflattering light. She is presented as a self-destructive, promiscuous alcoholic and junkie. In one controversial scene, she urinates in public.
Critics were indifferent to the play, but generally raved about Ms. Lapotaire's performance, and she eventually received the Tony Award as Best Actress in a play.
