Pike County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 12,837. The county seat is Petersburg6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 883 km² (341 mi²). 871 km² (336 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.44% water.

Pike County was formed in 1817. It was named for Zebulon M. Pike, mostly famous for the Pike Expedition of 1806 - 1807, exploring the southwest portion of the Louisiana Purchase. Pike also fought at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. Pike was killed, in 1813, in the War of 1812.
From 1959 to 1963 Vance Hartke and Homer E. Capehart were the U.S. Senators for Indiana, both from Pike County.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 12,837 people, 5,119 households, and 3,680 families residing in the county. The population density was 15/km² (38/mi²). There were 5,611 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.10% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 5,119 households out of which 30.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.80% were married couples living together, 8.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% were non-families. 24.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the county the population was spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 99.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $34,759, and the median income for a family was $41,420. Males had a median income of $31,967 versus $20,970 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,217. About 5.10% of families and 8.00% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.00% of those under age 18 and 9.70% of those age 65 or over.
