In the early 1950s, following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II there was strong objections to her title being used in Scotland, as she was the first Elizabeth to be queen of Scots. Scots vandalised and even blew up post boxes which carried the Queen's ER II insignia against a backdrop of rising nationalist sentiment.
In 1953, John MacCormick (MacCormick v. Lord Advocate) took legal action against the Lord Advocate, challenging the right of the Queen to call herself Elizabeth the Second. The case was lost however an important moral victory was gained with the statement by Lord President Cooper,which stated, that: "The principle of the unlimited sovereignty of Parliament is a distinctively English principle which has no counterpart in Scottish constitutional law."
Scottish post boxes produced since 1953 display the Scottish crown rather than the EIIR cypher.
