Pirates of the Mississippi is an American country music duo composed of Rich Alves and Bill McCorvey. Originally, Pirates of the Mississippi was a five-piece band which disbanded in 1996; however, original members Alves and McCorvey reunited in 2000 and assumed the name.
The Pirates were one of a handful of country bands who emerged in the wake of the Kentucky Headhunters' success in the early '90s. Bill McCorvey, Rich Alves, Dean Townson, Jimmy Lowe, and Pat Severs were the original members; prior to the group's formation in 1987, they were Nashville session musicians.
In 1989, an A&R representative at Capitol Nashville signed the group to a deal. In the summer of 1990, their eponymous debut was released.
Pat Severs left the group in 1994 and was replaced by Greg Trostle. In 1995, after losing a record deal with Capitol the Pirates of the Mississippi signed with Giant Records, releasing the album "Paradise", which failed to yield any singles. The group disbanded in 1996. In 2000, Alves and McCorvey decided to reunite, taking the group's original name.[1]
Bill McCorvey has now founded another band called Buffalo Rome[2], but there is no indication that Pirates of the Mississippi have disbanded a second time.
