Pizza King, Inc., is a family-owned business that has shaped the landscape of Indiana towns. Locally-owned Pizza King restaurants across the "Hoosier" state have made this company an Indiana tradition and household name.
Originally established in 1956 and located in Lafayette, Indiana. Pizza King, Inc., owns and runs seven corporate stores. But, they supply pizza ingredients to approximately 100 Indiana-based partner pizzerias.
[edit] Partner Restaurants
Most of their partners are independent "mom and pop" restaurants. These local stores buy ingredients from Pizza King, Inc., in return for use of the name and the corporate-owned logos: a King in a red cape eating a piece of pizza, and a model train carrying a soft drink. Unlike traditional franchises, the partners do not pay franchise fees. They are only required to buy their ingredients from the corporate commercial kitchens. The recipe for the ingredients is a trade secret.
The building design and layouts of Pizza King restaurants vary considerably from town to town. This is because the corporate office gives pizza entrepreneurs a great deal of creative freedom in running their business. But, because the ingredients are all purchased from the Lafayette kitchens, there is consistency in taste between restaurants from town to town. A complete list of the local Pizza King restaurants is contained on the corporate website.
[edit] Other Indiana Pizza King Group
- Main article: Pizza King (Indiana)
There is another group of about 40 pizzerias in the East-Central part of Indiana based out of Muncie, Indiana, that also does business under the Pizza King name. This group has a common ancestry with Pizza King, Inc., as the two groups split ways in 1958. The Muncie-based group does not buy ingredients from Pizza King, Inc. The relationship between the two Indiana Pizza King groups is mostly historical. They operate independently as cordial competitors under an agreement that was part of their 1958 split.
