I can answer that! I sell Playgirls....about 1/3 to 2/3 ratio women to men and I don't know that the women are necessarily ALWAYS reading them although some do. I do!! What they buy them for is usually their favorite celeb or for a boyfriend/hubby/partner who posed at some point. Most of the women aren't buying for collections or to read on a regular basis these days. I HAVE bought collections from older women who read them in the 70's and 80's and have saved them!!! Of course they're HOT with gay men.
I started out with Playgirl asking.....why??? And have realized after browsing while I list......HOT HOT HOT!! That's why!!!

What *REAL* proof is there that 50% of readers are gay? The article it is linked to does not quote the actual editors.

ANSWER: There is no proof, and no way to know. I used to work in a bookstore that sold Playgirl, and at least 4/5 who purchased it were men. My staff would even comment among themselves when a woman bought one, because it was so rare! I recall an editorial in the magazine in the early 1990s, acknowledging that "10%" of the readers were gay men, but that is ridiculously low. They claim to have used subscription data, but first of all, most readers don't subscribe, second, MANY subscribers use an initial ("J. Doe") and they claim that they assumed these were all women (more likely they were almost all MEN, embarrassed to have a man's name on the subscription!), thirdly, some male readers even state that they subscribed under a female name due to the stigma. Considering the number of "closeted" gay men who would never put their own name on a magazine like Playgirl, using subscription data is a foolish, unreliable way to measure readers.
In general, men are WAY more interested in "porn" magazines than women are. The magazines with naked men are sold mostly to men who like to see them.

This is incorrect. The Burt Reynolds centerfold appeared in Helen Gurley Brown's Cosmopolitan magazine, not Playgirl. Wall posters of this photo, taken by the famed fashion photog, Francesco Scavullo, were a sensation.

Somehow, I doubt that the Bobby Sands who was Mr July, 1985, is this Bobby Sands (and not just because he was 4 years dead by then). I don't want to mass revert all the wikilinking, but it has left a lot of redlinks and some clearly wrong links. Does anyone want to check them all? Regards, Ben Aveling 03:02, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
