The prologue covers a small portion of episode 01, "Blue Monday".

Our story opens with a typical day in the life of 14-year-old Renton Thurston. He lives with his grandfather Axel, works in his grandfather's garage, and attends school, leading a very boring and unfulfilling life in a small, boring town. As the son of the great military hero Adrock Thurston, Renton generally chafes under the expectations placed on him due to his parentage. His father died when Renton was just an infant, leaving Renton to be raised by his older sister Diane, until she disappeared in a quest to continue their father's work. Before her departure, Diane left Renton a Compac Drive. This device would from time to time display a single message, "Eureka."

Renton's only escape from his day-to-day drudgery is his ref board, a device that allows him to ride trapar (Transparence Light Particle) waves, a sport descended from surfing. Renton modeled his board after the one used by his idol, Holland, the leader of the independent rogue militia known as the Gekkostate. Naturally, Renton dreams of one day escaping his humdrum existence and joining the Gekkostate to live a life full of adventure.

[edit] Renton meets Eureka

This section concludes episode 01, and continues through the first half of episode 03, "Motion Blue".

That night, a strange girl named Eureka crash-lands her LFO—the legendary Nirvash typeZERO—on Renton's grandfather's house. The Nirvash, which Eureka regards much like a child, is in need of repairs.

Renton falls in love with Eureka practically at first sight. He is greatly impressed with her piloting skills and fascinated with her intuitive understanding of LFO technology, particularly the Nirvash. Oddly enough, even though there is a socket for a Compac Drive, the typeZERO does not appear to use such a device to interface with its pilot as do all other LFOs. When Renton points this out, Eureka reluctantly allows him to install his own Compac Drive, though she correctly predicts that nothing productive will happen. Renton's grandfather is less than thrilled by Eureka's appearance at his garage as he knows she is an associate of the renegade Holland. He angrily offers her something he has until now hidden away from everyone: a device called the "Amita Drive," an expansion part for the Compac Drive.^[1]

Before the Amita Drive can be installed, however, the military launches a missile attack against Axel's garage and flattens it. Eureka manages to get Renton and his grandfather out of the garage to relative safety and she immediately flees in the Nirvash to draw the fire of the KLFs away from them. Axel instructs Renton to deliver the Amita Drive to Eureka to unleash the typeZERO's full potential, and to eliminate all of the hostile combatants. After riding his motorcycle to the scene where Eureka and other members of the Gekkostate are battling the state military's KLFs, Renton makes a "leap of faith" and rides the motorcycle off a cliff, ref board in hand. His faith is rewarded as he finds that he can, indeed, ref as never before. Making his way skyward, he even manages to perform his first "cut-back drop-turn," an extremely difficult maneuver, impressing Holland in the process.

Renton is knocked off of his board, however, when he gets caught in the turbulence of the Nirvash passing close by. Eureka and the Nirvash manage to catch him in mid-air. Renton, still excited over his achievements in the air, blurts out to Eureka that he is in love with her. Renton attaches the Amita Drive atop the Compac Drive he left in the Nirvash's socket. A bright flash of light initially appears to render Eureka unconscious and the Nirvash inoperable (with incoming enemy missiles on the way). However, Eureka quickly recovers, and the unique combination of Renton, Eureka and the typeZERO unleashes the mysterious and spectacular phenomenon called "The Seven Swell Effect". The energy this releases grants incredible speed and strength to the Nirvash, rapidly increases the local trapar particle levels, and sears the surrounding landscape.

Eureka later explains to Holland that the Nirvash says that the addition of the Amita Drive was not solely responsible for its new-found abilities, but the presence of Renton was necessary, too. Eureka and Holland ask Renton to join the Gekkostate and Axel unwittingly lets Renton go.

[edit] Life on board the Gekko

This section concludes episode 03, and continues through episode 21, "Runaway".

Within days of boarding the Gekkostate's ship and HQ, the Gekko, Renton discovers that life on board isn't as exciting or glamorous as he had thought it would be. It seemed to Renton that he was always given the menial jobs, and he suffered initiation pranks from more senior crew members. His ability to co-pilot the Nirvash was initially limited by motion sickness he experienced due to the differences in timing between how he lifts and how Eureka lifts.

Despite Renton's awkwardness, both Holland and Mischa note a remarkable increase in the performance of the typeZERO, and Holland assigns Renton as the co-pilot for the time being. Mischa later determines that the activation of the Amita Drive hinges on the mental balance of Renton and Eureka.^[2]

Renton's increasing skill as the Nirvash's co-pilot, unfortunately, does not seem to improve his relationship with Eureka, and her adopted children Maurice, Maeter and Linck constantly compete with him for her attention. They view him as a threat that could someday take her from them and do everything in their power to make his life miserable. However, following an accident where the children disable the central computer and Compac interference system, Renton brings them on a reckless mission to blind a nearby radar station — and show them how real graffiti is done in the process. Although Renton is confined to the brig as a result, the children join him there in apology and thanks.^[3]

One day, Eureka invites Renton out to a shopping trip with her children, in which Maeter becomes separated from the group while Renton and Linck quarrel over the younger boy's teasing. After a frantic search, they discover that Maeter is in the care of an elderly lady who invites them to stay for tea. A (dud) grenade is thrown into the apartment, and Holland and Matthieu barge in with guns drawn. Gekkostate has been offered a job (ironically, by the military) to capture the woman, who is a disciple and leader of the Vodarek named Tiptory, and regarded as a terrorist by the military. What Gekkostate does not take into account, however, is Tiptory's infuriating and surprising physical and tactical prowess. It takes nearly all of Gekkostate's LFOs and a large crate to capture the elusive woman. Even more inconceivable to Renton than the actual capture, though, is that Tiptory invites the crew to dinner at her apartment while they wait for the military to arrive. Holland's objective, in fact, is to learn where a certain man named Norb was. In a classic bait and switch, Holland accepts the bounty immediately before Renton, Eureka, and the Nirvash snatch Tiptory, before the military can touch her. The military's KLFs try to give chase, but a well-aimed laser shot by the Gekko disables their carrier ship.^[4]

Holland then offers to take Tiptory anywhere she wants, and she requests a ruined city called Ciudades del Cielo. She refers to it as a place of purification, the capital of the sky, and a gateway of decision.^[5] When they drop her off, Tiptory gives Holland a bottle of bright yellow liquid, "just in case you need it". Holland wants to leave immediately, but Renton and Moondoggie are enticed by the rich trapar waves in the area. Furious, Holland proceeds to beat Renton into the ground. Upset by the treatment received at the hands of his idol, Renton flees into the city. Amid a couple of crashes, Renton realizes that the ruins are still inhabited. The disciples of Vodarek are still living near there, in hiding, years after the military destroyed the city. When Eureka and the Nirvash arrive in search of Renton, the people began to stone her, because they still remember when she was still in the military, and had coldly slaughtered many Vodarek lives. Just then, a military bomber comes for a routine air raid, forcing the Vodarek refugees back under cover.

As Renton tends to her wounds, Eureka tells him about how she, Holland, and their SOF unit destroyed the city and slaughtered its inhabitants. However, she discovered three small children whose parents she had killed, and her world changed forever. When Eureka tells Renton that she asked him to join Gekkostate to fight in a war she is still fighting, Renton retorts that she left the military because she didn't want to hurt anyone anymore. As he called out to her to come with him to save Tiptory and the others, the Amita Drive activates.^[6] and Eureka hears the Nirvash telling her to do what Renton says. Together, they destroy the bomber's main reflector, severely impairing its flight ability. Renton is ready to face the music for being a bother to Holland, but instead Holland gives him a ref board wheel, making him a fully-fledged member of Gekkostate. Talho then gives him his own quarters aboard the ship, and a job, as the onboard shop clerk.

[edit] Anemone

However, the Seven Swell phenomenon is not ignored by the government, and in order to attend to this matter, they recommission Dewey Novak, a military commander who was in prison, to his former position. After gaining his job back, he begins to assemble allies like Dominic Sorel, a young officer who was his eyes and ears during his incarceration, and Anemone, a girl about the age of Eureka, and pilot of the LFO Nirvash typeTheEND.

Anemone later fights against Eureka and Renton in the skies above Salisaolne, and is almost successful in bringing them down during the investigation of a spherical gaseous anomaly known only as a "Coralian". Both the typeZERO and typeTheEND enter into the area inside the anomaly called the "Zone"^[7] and through a dreamlike connection between the three pilots, both girls are rendered unconscious.^[8] Outside the Zone, the Gekko is forced to fight off, and, after sustaining damage, escape the Izumo, which carried TheEND, and both LFOs are stranded as the trapar levels in the area are rapidly depleted. When Dominic arrives to help Anemone, Renton forces the young intelligence officer to help him as well, with the mechanical know-how he learned from his grandfather.^[9] Gekkostate's LFOs and the military KLFs arrived at the crash site simultaneously to get both the Nirvash typeZERO and typeTheEND. In the midst of the battlefield, Renton activates the Amita drive through his desire to protect Eureka creating a huge shield of trapar covering the area where both LFO's are stranded. This allowed the Gekkostate to escape.

[edit] Breakdown

As the military's hunt for Gekkostate escalates, things start to worsen for Renton. During an incident in Contlorado involving a brief health craze aboard the Gekko and Renton's father's patriotic friend Yucatan, Renton found that his skill in piloting the Nirvash has grown since Nirvash accepted him into the pilot's seat earlier. Unfortunately, as a result he and Eureka began to grow distant from one another, as Eureka does not share Renton's enthusiasm over this discovery, fearing that conversely she is becoming more distant from the Nirvash.^[10] Because the trapar levels remain low in the general area, the Gekko is forced to land and hide in an abandoned mine to repair the damage incurred during the battle with the Izumo outside the Zone.

After an incident in which the Nirvash is hijacked by an old excavator (for which Holland takes his frustrations out on Renton), Renton blows off Eureka's offer to let him be the pilot of the Nirvash.^[11] A hurt and lonely Eureka then attempts to return to the planet, only to be pulled out by Renton in a barely-recognizable state.^[12] In order to treat Eureka, Holland risks his life in a suicide mission to retrieve a disciple of Vodarek from prison. When he is cornered by KLFs, Renton and the Nirvash savagely destroy them; in the process, Renton realizes the cost of the war he is now fighting.^[13] When he attempts to reconcile with Eureka, she becomes frightened by him, and this serves as a final rejection for Renton — he bails out of the Gekko.^[14]

[edit] Charles and Ray

This section covers episode 22, "Crackpot", through episode 28, "Memento Mori".

Wandering around the country, Renton meets Charles and Ray Beams, a couple of LFO freelancer pilots. The trio hit it off very quickly, but the days spent as a close family were short-lived because of his relationship to Adrock and Eureka. Renton realizes that he cannot remain with them on their ship, the Swan, and they part amicably, though sadly.

Back on board the Gekko, Eureka's overwhelming need for Renton takes its toll on her piloting ability and on the crew, who held Holland responsible for Renton's departure. Even Holland's girlfriend, Talho, urges him to bring Renton back. After mulling over an argument with Talho and seeing Eureka desperately trying to move the Nirvash, Holland decides to search for Renton, and leaves in the 606^[15] in search of Renton, he discovers that the military was setting a blockade around the Gekko, and immediately returns to plan their escape route.^[16]

Upset that Holland broke his promise to bring Renton back, Eureka heads out alone on a ref board to search for him — Renton, coincidentally, arrives at the Gekko's position only moments later — finding instead a trap set by Charles and Ray. As she tries to warn the Gekko about the imminent attack, the Swan opens fire on her, and Charles scrambles his LFO. Just as Charles is about to capture Eureka, Renton arrives with the Nirvash to save her. Reunited, the pair uses the power of the Amita Drive to defeat all of the enemies without killing a single soldier. At this point, the Nirvash's archetype evolves through the use of the Amita Drive, and some of its now-incompatible armor plates fall off.^[17]

But Charles and Ray don't give up. Even though the military has given up the chase, they decide to change tactics and infiltrate the Gekko. Holland has thought ahead of them and prepared some defenses, including an anti-personnel laser near the bridge. He also puts Eureka and Renton in a the brig under the pretense of punishing them for disobedience, because he knows they are the Beams' main target. Amid the chaos of the firefight, the Nirvash begins to move without a pilot again, as if in reaction to Renton and Eureka's moment of danger, or possibly attempting to crush Charles. In the end, Charles is killed by Holland, and Ray manages to escape by using an implanted bomb in Charles' corpse as a diversion.^[18]

Ray returns alone to the Swan and prepares a full-scale suicide attack against the Gekko. Her intention is to take revenge on Holland and Eureka, who was especially despicable in Ray's mind, as she thought it was the Seven Swell effect that made her unable to bear children, and because Eureka "stole" Renton, whom she loved as a son, from her. Even without the help of Eureka, Renton, or the Nirvash, the rest of the crew manages to defeat Ray, destroying her ship and killing her in the process. Holland is still severely injured from his fight with Charles, and begins to bleed from the stress of piloting an LFO. Without enough supplies to replenish his blood, an emergency tranfusion becomes necessary. The only compatible donor was Renton. Talho despises the idea at first; she doesn't want Holland to receive blood from someone related to Diane Thurston, but eventually she asks Renton to save him.^[19]

[edit] Rebuilding the Nirvash

This section covers episode 29, "Keep On Movin'", through episode 32, "Start It Up".

While Holland is unconscious, Talho decides that the crew should set course for the military research facility in Tresor, where the Nirvash was created, in order to repair it. On the way there, she also tells Renton the truth about Gekkostate and Eureka.

Talho reveals that Gekkostate's true mission is to fulfill the wishes of Adrock Thurston by creating a world where humans and the "Coralians" (hidden beings that live in the planet) can coexist. In order to attain that, their one hope is Eureka, who is actually a humanoid Coralian, discovered years ago by human scientists. Renton reassures Eureka, who was keenly aware of how humans can fear differences, that his feelings for her would not change, no matter who or what she was.^[20]

Holland knew many of the technicians at Tresor because of his military background, but was at odds in the past with Dr. Morita, the director. Naturally, the crew thinks that because of Holland (and because Tresor is a government facility), the Tresor technicians will resist helping the rebel Gekkostate. Fortunately, the researchers and engineers in Tresor agree to help, as many of them are good friends of Mischa and Eureka, and they have, as Renton put it, "Grandpa's smell" (meaning, because they were scientists and engineers, one look at the Nirvash would compel them to help). It was at this time that the engineers at Tresor get into contact with Axel Thurston, in order to commission him to make a new ref board for the Nirvash. Dr. Morita somehow gets the old mechanic to agree, albeit not without some difficulty.^[21]

During the restoration procedure, the Nirvash begins moving out of control as if it is rejecting the repair work. Eureka tells the technicians that the Nirvash does not want to return to its former state. According to Dr. Bear, the Nirvash's archetype now demands a new hardware design that will allow it to transform into a high-performance jet.^[22]

Just before the upgrades are concluded, the Ageha Squad launches the first attack on the Coralians, under the codename "Orange Project". Three newly-developed missiles are launched from orbit, piercing the ground and provoking a reaction from underground Coralian antibodies that emerge and attack a nearby city, brutally killing most of its inhabitants. Shortly thereafter, the Coralians withdraw, leaving dead humans and Coralians alike. Despite their distance from the counterattack, both Eureka and Anemone are seriously affected, to the point of collapse. The Ageha Squad children gleefully recorded the distance between the Orange attack and the point of the antibody Coralians' appearance, as well as the duration of the Coralian counterattack.

The U.F. government falsely declares that the recent wave of earthquakes that plagued the world are a message from the Coralians to humans demanding their departure fom the planet. The spaceship that brought mankind there, however, is not capable of such a massive evacuation, and so the U.F. declares war on the Coralians.

As the Tresor scientists finish their work on the Nirvash, the Gekko receives a transmission from Axel Thurston, informing them that the Nirvash's new ref board is complete. Because his workshop has been discovered by government agents, he will lift it and let it flow in a trapar "jet-stream" called the Ray Line to a rendezvous point where they can retrieve it. As Axel is about to leave, the abandoned hangar that served as his workshop is surrounded by U.F. soldiers who discovered its location, but with the help of an excavator friend, he breaks through the military's blockade and manages to launch the Nirvash's new board almost according to plan.

Meanwhile, the Ageha Squad launches a second strike on the Coralians, and under Dewey's authority, orders Anemone to observe them closely with TheEND, despite Dominic's protests about her condition. Just before she departs, however, she hears that the Gekko is in the vicinity. Ignoring her orders, Anemone gleefully sets out to do battle with the typeZERO. Eureka and Renton launch the typeZERO without its board, and manage to retrieve it in midair. The board completes the Nirvash typeZERO Spec2, and its superior performance, as well as Renton's and Eureka's mastery of the Amita Drive, force Anemone to flee with a heavily damaged TheEND.^[23]

[edit] Norb

This section covers episode 33, "Pacific State", through episode 35, "Astral Apache".

Gekkostate's resounding victory is tempered by the tragedy that has occurred in the nearby city of Gremicore, which has fallen victim to the Coralian antibody response to the attack by the Ageha Squad. A search-and-rescue operation is launched by the Gekko, but no survivors are found, unlike the previous attack. The great loss of life is devastating to Eureka, who withdraws to her quarters, believing that the tragedy is somehow her fault.

The recent attacks also raise a question among the crew; namely, will they be able to achieve their goal of bringing about a world where Coralians and humans can peacefully coexist when they must defend themselves against Coralian antibodies? Talho, sensing both Holland's need to sort out his thoughts and Renton and Eureka's need to reconnect, grounds the Gekko by informing Woz about a "glitch" in the flight controls. The crew takes this opportunity to lift in the trapar-rich area, notably Renton and Eureka, who borrow Holland and Talho's old longboard. Holland attempts to lift himself, but his battered body is not capable of handling the physical exertion. Through the experience, however, he rediscovers his love of the sport, of the planet on which it is possible, and of Talho.

In a meeting of all crew members, he apologizes to Renton and Eureka for abusing them, and announces the disbanding of Gekkostate. Norb, the Vodarek priest who revealed the truths about Scub Coral and Eureka to Holland, has been arrested in the capital city. Because the last hope for the coexistence of humans and Coralians will die should Norb die, Holland decides to retrieve the priest. Since this would lead to an unprecedented risk for the crew, Holland also decides as his last order that anyone who wants to bail out will be free to do so before the mission. However, because they determine that this mission and Gekkostate's goals are one and the same, every member of Gekkostate remains on board.^[24]

En route to the capital, Holland tells Renton about his past with Eureka and the day he met Norb in Ciudades del Cielo, the very same city where Eureka met Maurice, Maeter, and Linck. During that mission, Norb demonstrated his incredibly powerful ability to manipulate trapar waves and the compac drive, and told Holland to find Eureka's partner — the one who can "make her smile from her heart."^[25] In this way, says Holland, Norb put the fate of the universe in his hands.

In a final briefing before the mission, they discuss a dilemma: Talho is the only person aboard whom their contact in Intelligence (who would provide Norb's exact location) would recognize, but the Gekko will need a pilot during combat. Moondoggie offers to pilot the ship, revealing that not only does he have a license, but that he has been searching for a real purpose on board ever since he joined Gekkostate. Later that evening, Talho reveals to Holland that she is pregnant with their child.

When Norb arrives in the audience hall of the Sage Council, he is surprised to see Dewey Novak there instead. Dewey takes the priest to his office, where they debate the actions of the Ageha Squad and Dewey's objectives. They remove themselves to Tiller Garden, where Norb reveals the secret of his power: a Compac Drive embedded in his chest. Dewey, though surprised, does not seem impressed.^[26]

That day, Gekkostate launches a full frontal assault on the capital's defenses. Although they fight at first, Renton and Eureka are disturbed by their comrades' uncompromising fighting style. When she realized that the lives of children will be at risk, Eureka pulls herself and Nirvash out of the fight. According to plan, Hilda and Talho fake a friendly-fire incident as a cover to retrieve Norb's location at the rendezvous point; however, the Intelligence officer has been arrested and interrogated by the Ageha Squad. Fortunately, he left behind Norb's whereabouts. Holland immediately destroys the defending KLFs near Tiller Garden and lands there, confronting Dewey Novak — his older brother.

Renton, meanwhile, manages to convince Eureka to press onward for what they believe in, because they need to end the war between the Coralians and humans. At Tiller Garden, Dewey berates Holland for his "futile efforts", believing that Eureka's partner is yet to be found (if he exists at all), and loudly proclaims the value of manipulating the populace to meet his own ends. When Holland replies that Dewey is quite wrong, the Nirvash, with Renton and Eureka, arrives and sweeps Norb away to the Gekko, leaving Dewey in a rage.

Meanwhile, the capital's main power plant is sabotaged by Talho and Hilda, the reason being (according to Talho), "I didn't want to see that guy's face ever again." Talho retires her post as ship's pilot for the captain's chair, allowing Moondoggie to take up the pilot's position permanently.^[27]

[edit] The Great Wall

This section covers episode 36, "Fantasia", through episode 42, "Star Dancer".

Dewey, angered by Holland's progress, resolves to push forward with his plans of locating the Command Cluster of the Scub Coral before the Great Wall can be crossed. Defying an order to appear before the Sage Council, he launches his new flagship, the Galaxy (銀河号, Ginga-gō^?), and authorizes another Orange Project attack. This time, he sends Anemone with a VC10 KLF support squadron to "defend" the affected city for propaganda purposes.^[28] In reality, TheEND is simply waiting for the antibody Coralians' time limit of 1,246 seconds to expire, then attacking, making it seem as if the Ageha Squad had destroyed them.

Norb proves an indulgent, lazy, and difficult fellow on board, enjoying cigarettes and junk food, and eschewing personal hygiene. He directs Holland to head for the Vodarek temple, and to hurry, as Renton and Eureka's relationship shows signs of deepening.^[29] In order to disseminate the truth about Scub Coral to the lifters via the counterculture magazine ray=out, Stoner arranges an interview with Greg "Dr. Bear" Egan and Norb. Dr. Bear explains his living Scub Coral hypothesis, and that the military's Orange Project is only designed to draw out Coralian antibodies to determine their source. Furthermore, he explains that if Scub Coral is overloaded with intelligent life, the "Limit of Questions" phenomenon will occur, which will then consume the physical universe. Norb, at this point, replies that this world is but a bubble of the thoughts of Vodarek, and if it is filled with worry, pain, and doubt, Vodarek's thoughts would vanish—along with this universe. The term "Vodarek" describes a state of being that itself has a will. When Dr. Bear says that his calculations indicate that there is more than enough intelligent life to trigger the Limit of Questions, Norb answers that the planet is dreaming — meaning the only reason that the planet has not triggered the Limit of Questions is because most of the Scub Coral is in a dormant state.

Concerning the planet's region known as the Great Wall, Dr. Bear says that in the capital's intelligence database, he found that the Great Wall was the result of a large meteorite striking Scub Coral almost ten millennia ago, drawing out massive numbers of Coralian antibodies, and thus exceeding the Limit of Questions. The Scub Coral had then forced itself into a dormant state; however, the region of space where the Limit of Questions had been exceeded was permanently altered; in this space, the laws of physics do not apply. This region is what is called the Great Wall. Should all of Scub Coral be awakened, triggering the Limit of Questions, that region would expand to envelop the entire physical universe. Norb said that in order to prevent the awakening of Scub Coral, humanity must become one with the Scub Coral.

At this time, Dewey airs footage of the Coralian antibody counterattack, conveniently omitting the facts that his Ageha Squad had initiated the attack, and that the "defenders" had precisely arrived moments before the antibodies would withdraw. His impassioned speech effectively undermines the authority of the Sages and distorts the ideals of Adrock Thurston. Taking advantage of the power outage in the capital caused earlier by Gekkostate, Dewey loudly and falsely proclaims that he will "rescue" it from a Coralian attack.

The scientists and technicians, having completed the spec upgrade of the Nirvash, head back to Tresor in order to study the Limit of Questions theory in greater detail. Norb warns that the goal must be accomplished before Eureka became too humanlike, as the essential thing was to have a human and Coralian aboard the Nirvash.^[28]

When Eureka mentions that Adrock told her that the future is beyond the Great Wall, Renton is stunned that she even knew his father. Forgetting that Eureka wasn't born with the same desire to know family better, Renton angrily demands why she didn't say anything about his father. She responds by saying she isn't human, and runs off upset. Depressed, they find themselves in a series of misunderstandings involving much of the crew, that inevitably lead him and Eureka to make amends and talk about Adrock. In saying he doesn't deserve to sit next to Eureka, Renton inadvertently echoes the very words spoken by his father during the Summer of Love incident involving the first recorded Seven Swell effect.

After invading the capital city, Dewey Novak assassinates two of the three Sages, leaving just Coda to surrender the government to him. In doing so Dewey becomes the unquestioned despot of the entire world.^[30] In a press conference, he lays the blame of the Sages' deaths on the Coralians, but says that they deserved it for hiding the truth about the Coralians from the people. He proclaims that the military will launch an attack on the Great Wall to destroy the Coralians once and for all, and he sends the Galaxy, along with TheEND and Anemone, to the Vodarek temple.

En route to the Vodarek temple, Holland orders the entire crew to play soccer in Liverchester, per Norb's direction. Given the urgency expressed earlier (and given the general lack of fitness and experience), the crew is less than thrilled with the prospect. The only ones who are enthusiastic were Renton — who had played before as a child — and Eureka. Although he is very skilled, Renton quickly finds that his rather self-centered style of play isn't very effective — since he always played just by himself, he doesn't know how to pass the ball. Stoner, Hap, and Matthieu, in between forced practices, discuss whether Norb's intention is to break Renton free from self-centered thoughts, or to determine how he and Eureka perform as a team. But their discussion is abruptly ended when a team of professional players arrive to challenge the crew to a game. Predictably, team Gekko is given a sound thrashing in the first half: 34-0. Frustrated, Holland empties their net and sets a fully offensive strategy. The gamble pays off — Renton finally makes a pass, and together with Eureka (and to some extent, Holland), they score the team's only goal. The game abruptly ends upon the arrival of military KLFs, and the Gekko launches.

Finally, when asked why he suggested that the crew play soccer, Norb replied, "Whether or not anyone found something through this, it is well. Besides that, wasn't it fun?".^[31]

Not long after the game, the Gekko arrives at an airstrip near the Vodarek temple. Although Eureka is scared to talk to Tiptory again, Tiptory greets Eureka with open arms. The temple city itself is a refuge for all Vodarek followers and victims of Coralian counterattacks, but those who have allied themselves with Norb are under persecution. Since it happens to be the Love Parade, a festival celebrating the Saint, Tiptory and Holland realize the timing is perfect to sneak Norb, Eureka, and Renton into the Temple to see Sakuya — the humanoid Coralian who preceded Eureka. After Norb is given a thorough bathing for the first time in forty years (over his vehement protests) to eliminate the tell-tale odor, Gekkostate proceeds with the plan. When Renton asks what happens next, Norb answered that should Sakuya see it fit, everything will change irreversibly. This troubles Maurice, Maeter, and Linck, and so they stow away on the Nirvash. This, compounded with Linck's curiosity, causes the Nirvash to break free from its disguise early, and Holland proceeds to send in the 606 and 808 to protect the entrance to the temple, while the Nirvash takes the children, Renton, Eureka, and Norb into the temple itself to see Sakuya.

They proceed deep underground into the heart of the temple, while Holland, Stoner, Matthieu, and Hilda hold off the guards. The airspace above the temple is acting as a force field which reflects EM energy, including lasers and radio. In the heart of the temple, they find an enormous lotus blossom.^[32] Sakuya is inside the flower, and she invites Eureka inside. Norb and Sakuya tell Renton and Eureka (respectively) about how they met: Norb was a young acolyte of Vodarek, charged with serving Sakuya — whom the monks believed was a holy one given up by the land itself — without ever talking to her. But on the day he broke the oath of silence while giving her a flower, he caused her clouded heart to open up to him alone. When their relationship was discovered by the religious authority, they hurriedly sent Norb and Sakuya to cross the Great Wall to become one with the planet. However, the attempt failed, and as Sakuya was disintegrating in the Zone, Norb grabbed Sakuya's compac drive. Thus the compac drive became embedded in his chest, and Sakuya was transformed into a giant lotus. But they learned that Eureka would be born soon, the next and last hope for humanity and Scub Coral.

As Eureka emerges from the lotus, Sakuya redirects her power from maintaining the force field above the temple to opening the way to the Zone beyond the Great Wall once again — this time, for Eureka and Renton.^[33] Meanwhile, three air force vessels arrive to attack the city. Holland directs the Gekko to launch the 909 in midair, to rendezvous with Matthieu's 606. When Dewey hears that the wall surrounding the temple has been successfully attacked, he orders an immediate Orange air strike on the Scub Coral in the area, and TheEND's launch. As before, the resulting Coralian antibody counterattack is devastating to both the military and the city. After confirming the Nirvash's exit from the temple and fending off the antibody Coralians themselves, the 606 and 808 return to the Gekko. After a few moments together to reflect, Norb and Sakuya together open the way to the Zone. Holland and the Gekko fight through the Coralian antibodies and TheEND to clear the way for the Nirvash, which moves by itself to the Zone. The 909, however, is no match for Anemone and TheEND, despite the use of the Compac Feedback system. After a moment's indecision, Renton and Eureka fly through the Zone; although she tries to give chase, Anemone instead sees why she cannot pass through.

After crossing the Great Wall, Renton, Eureka, and the children find themselves overlooking the unfamiliar world known as the Promised Land.^[34]

[edit] The Promised Land

This section covers episode 43, "The Sunshine Underground", through episode 48, "Ballet Mechanique".

Although they are underground, the Promised Land appears very much like the environment above, except for a large body of very salty water. Even though they know they needed to be in the Promised Land, Renton and Eureka have no idea where to proceed. This indecision later turns into conflict between the two. Maurice finds a package left in the Nirvash by Norb; it is an introductory geography textbook on the Earth, the home planet that humanity had abandoned ten thousand years ago. Recognizing the distinctive shape of the Japanese archipelago from their journey through the Great Wall, Renton realizes that the true Promised Land is none other than the Earth itself. They find themselves stranded on a beach surrounded by a fragile cliff, and Eureka discovers that her body is changing again.

The destruction caused by the attack takes its toll on Dominic emotionally, and he tries to deepen his relationship with Anemone. She however angrily rejects him. Claiming that he doesn't really know her and couldn't feel the way he does. On New Year's Eve, Dewey invites Anemone to a formal ball commemorating the new world order under his rule, and gives Dominic his new orders: proceed to Warsaw, and find the next pilot for TheEND. The ball is a gathering of former bureaucrats and current military leaders, both distasteful to Anemone. Dewey confides in Anemone that he is the Sacrifice King. He tells her about the Novak family: how his mother died giving birth to Holland, and how their father allegedly took that as a sign that Holland was the true Sacrifice King, and thus showered favor on Holland. Frustrated that their father didn't set any responsibility of leadership on Holland, Dewey ceremonially murdered his father. However, that night a tectonic shift occurred, and the noblemen declared it as a sign that what Dewey had done was not a valid rite of succession, and the two brothers lost their estate and their right to govern. Still, Dewey had thought, he was the true Sacrifice King. But with Adrock's research, he had realized that the beliefs of the nobles, as well as his own bloodline, were worthless. Thus, by becoming the true king, he felt that he would purify that which was worthless.

In low orbit, an upgraded Gekko and a hitherto unseen LFO, the Terminus typeB303 "Devilfish", attack and destroy the ships bearing the Orange Project missiles responsible for the direct attacks on the Scub Coral. Although the 303's performance is exceptional, it requires the use of performance-enhancing drugs and as such, takes a severe toll on its pilot, Holland Novak. The alternative radio networks broadcast the latest news from ray=out, and urge the lifter community to help out in any way they can.

Meanwhile, Dominic boards Captain Jurgens' ship (along with a stowaway Gulliver) to make the journey to Warsaw. When Jurgens stops to pay respect to his dead family, Dominic inconsiderately demands that he not hold them up just for that — like Jurgens, he too is the only survivor of his family. They arrived at a laboratory full of young women suffering from the Desperation Disease. The young women, transfixed on their compac drives, were all retrieved from war zones. From these three candidates were selected to replace Anemone, but they die during the final test using the same mood-stabilizing drugs that Anemone used. Apparently Anemone was a special case among all the young women developed in this way, as she was very resilient to drug therapies, and she had a strong affinity for the Zone. Dominic thus sees his hope for getting Anemone out of the military die with the three young women. Jurgens shows him the "Pacific State" issue of ray=out, and, ignoring the new orders to investigate Tresor for harboring Gekkostate, they decide to meet with Dr. Bear instead.

Underground, Eureka sullenly pulls everyone into a blind search. Maurice rails at Renton for being too relaxed in handling their situation. When Eureka tries to withdraw because of her transforming left arm, Renton tries to pull her back, but she runs away, even telling Maurice not to follow her. When she disappears later that night, Renton and the children discover Eureka, with her scars now turned into glowing green tissue. Terrified of how they might see her, Eureka runs away again, but trips and falls. Eureka says they can't be together like this, but Renton blames himself for not realizing how scared and hurt she was, and beats his arm open with a stone so they wouldn't look so different. Maurice retrieves the rifle that Holland had placed in the Nirvash, and threatens Renton as he feels Renton has brought only pain and suffering to his foster mother. Eureka steps in front of Renton, saying that even if Maurice hates her current form, she still loves him and doesn't want him to see what she's seen. Maurice drops the rifle, and although the bridges are mended, Renton soon falls victim to a severe infection, brought on by his earlier self-mutilation of his arm.

Meanwhile, Jurgens and Dominic are considering joining forces with Gekkostate against Dewey based on what they have read in ray=out. Naturally, the thought of joining their former enemy is foreign to both Jurgens' crew and pilots, as well as the Gekkostate members. Ken-Goh convinces Holland that Jurgens' intentions are sincere, since he believes from having fought against Jurgens before that he is an honest man. Dr. Bear appears and shows them a recording of the conversation between himself and Norb. After seeing the recording, Jurgens orders his crew and all ships and KLFs in the vicinity to view the footage. The next morning, Jurgens declares a cessation of hostilities with Gekkostate and he and Dominic manage to convince Gekkostate to let them fight side-by-side. Dominic himself defects to Gekkostate and moves aboard the Gekko. First Officer Maria Schneider, along with all 88 crew members and KLF pilots of the Izumo, remain to join Jurgens and Dominic's cause.

The Ageha Squad soon determines the general vicinity of the Scub Coral's Command Cluster — the center of the Tian Shan mountain range. Dewey launches Operation "Nenokatasu", the final assault on the Scub Coral. The lifting community catches on to the movements of 80% of the military's air force, and broadcast throughout the world that their destination is that mountain range, thus alerting Gekkostate. With the military fleet in formation above the mountains, the Ageha Squad sets about moving their orbital energy beam weapon, "Oratorio No. 8", into position.

While Eureka and the children tend to Renton's wound and fever, a storm arrives on the beach upon which the group is camped. That night, Eureka's body transforms once again, turning her entire left arm into the green Coralian tissue, and butterfly-like wings emerge from her back. Although her fears of rejection still hadn't subsided, her children assure her that she is still in fact their mother. The next morning, Renton's fever and the storm break, and he sees Eureka as a thing of beauty, sweeping away what had remained of her fear of rejection.^[35] They discover a huge mountain of sand, and footprints leading over its expanse. Beyond, they see a path outlined in the ocean, and the Nirvash springs into action. When they follow the path, they find a strange formation in the distance that causes the Compac Drive to react as a beacon. Upon arrival on the unfamiliar beach, Renton spies Diane Thurston, his sister.

As the overhaul and upgrade of the Izumo is progressing at Tresor, Jurgens comments that since they as soldiers are steeped in the blood of their enemies and comrades, the ship likewise ought to be so, and requests that it be painted bright red. In response, Dr. Bear mutters, "I just don't understand military types..." They are to face suicidal odds: 13,000 military vessels to 2. Even so, both the Gekko and the newly refitted "Super Izumo" set course for the Tian Shan mountains.

Excited and agitated, Renton jumps down from the Nirvash, and runs full-tilt to his sister. After a tearful greeting, he looks around and realizes that he wasn't on a beach anymore, but in a huge open-air library, with neither Eureka nor Nirvash anywhere in sight. Diane tells him that he and Eureka have found Eureka's real home, the Scub Coral's Command Cluster. The appearance of the library is to help humans understand and communicate with the Scub Coral's thoughts. When Eureka comes to, she is holding the book that represents her, and remembers that she needs to deliver it.

Ten thousand years ago, the Scub Coral first made contact with the Earth. No one, not even the Scub Coral, knows whether its origins were artificial or natural, but it began its life in Earth's oceans, and assimilated every life form with which it came in contact. However, it had not learned of any other way to communicate with life forms, and it had quickly grown to become the largest life form on Earth. Even though people feared the Scub Coral, that message was lost on it. The more aggressively humans tried to reclaim the Earth, the more aggressively the Scub Coral responded. And so, humanity left Earth behind them, leaving the Scub Coral to assimilate every life form on Earth. But when it surrounded the Earth completely, it realized that it was the only intelligent life on Earth. Thousands of years later, humanity returned to the earth, unaware that it was the same planet from which they previously fled. The Scub Coral was overjoyed at the prospect of communicating with humanity once more, but, having realized by this time that humans feared it, knew that it had to be much more careful and subtle than before. Thus, it sent Sakuya and Eureka to determine whether unity with humanity was possible, and if so, how to accomplish it. Gonzy was probably sent to monitor Eureka's progress, since Sakuya's attempt was a failure.

In light of this revelation, Renton urges that they talk with the Scub Coral immediately, but Diane says that an attack on the Command Cluster is imminent, and that once the Cluster is destroyed the entire Scub Coral will awaken, and then there will be no way to stop the Limit of Questions. There is only one way that the Limit of Questions can be prevented, Diane says: for humanity to become one with the Scub Coral before the Command Cluster is destroyed. While humans would cease to exist in the physical world, human consciousness would be preserved within the Scub Coral. Frustrated with his sister's hopeless outlook, Renton insists that they do whatever they can. After all, he says, he and Eureka have chosen one another, and they will do anything to stay together. When Diane tells him that there's just not enough time to do anything but become one with the Scub Coral, Renton replies that he will prevent the attack on the Command Cluster with Eureka and the Nirvash. Renton and Eureka reunite on a hill overlooking the vast library, and he makes another astonishing discovery: a familiar man who had been listening to Eureka and the children. He is none other than Renton's father, Adrock Thurston, but is apparently now mute. Just then, Diane appears and tells Renton that the Command Cluster has decided to wait for Renton and Eureka to stop the attack, and the Nirvash appears to escort them back above the surface.

While in re-entry from space, Dominic broadcasts to the entire world the truth about the Scub Coral, and a worldwide panic ensues. After the preparations for firing are complete, Dewey counters with a broadcast of his own, revealing that the planet on which humanity is living is actually Earth and portraying the Scub Coral as a dastardly conqueror that forced humanity to flee. He activates Oratorio No. 8 to fire on the Scub Coral, and opens a massive chasm through the ground. Dewey sends TheEND through the chasm to the Earth underneath to destroy the Nirvash TypeZERO and launch a device to pinpoint the exact location of the Command Cluster. Holland launches the 303 to intercept TheEND, but Dominic commandeers the Super Izumo's high-speed shuttle one last time and convinces Holland to let him go instead, the latter turning his attention to the KLFs launched against the Gekko and Super Izumo. As the crust regenerates itself and finally closes behind Dominic, all contact with the shuttle is lost, and it is presumed destroyed by the Gekko and Super Izumo. The two rebel ships escape to low Earth orbit, but Dewey decides not to send pursuit.

Anemone, meanwhile, is in turmoil: Dewey is not the hero she thought he was, and Dominic is all but inaccessible. As she arrives at the Command Cluster, the Nirvash jumps into the air without prompting from Renton or Eureka to intercept her. Despite a heated dogfight, TheEND is able to fire the transponder into the Command Cluster. In the midst of the battle, Eureka hears Nirvash telling her to listen to the thoughts of TheEND's rider. Reluctantly Renton agrees, and they hear a young woman who believes her life is all but over, planning for the unlikely event that she will be reborn or permitted to live. Eureka and Renton do their best to comfort her, but the hurt is too great. As she begins a point-blank attack on the Nirvash, she hears Dominic calling her name, falling through the sky several hundred feet above her. However, the attack has already been initiated, and Anemone is unable to stop TheEND from activating its ultimate weapon, the Vascudo Crisis. Although the shot misses the typeZERO, Dominic is caught within the shock wave of the blast, sending him tumbling out of control, away from the two LFOs. As Anemone screams out for Dominic in anguish, TheEND's coloring changes from black to white. She lets TheEND eject her towards Dominic, and they reunite in midair. TheEND then catches them, and lands safely nearby.

However, Dewey now knows the precise location of the Command Cluster, and he fires Oratorio No. 8 at maximum power, locked onto the transponder's signal. The resulting blast obliterates the Command Cluster, destroys TheEND, and severely damages the Nirvash, although both LFOs successfully protect their pilots and passengers.

[edit] The Second Summer of Love

This section covers episode 49, "Shout To the Top!", and most of episode 50, "When You Wish Upon a Star".

The shot that has destroyed the Command Cluster also overloads and destroys Oratorio No. 8, and as its fragments fall back to the earth, they destroy 31 of the 157 towers that served as civilian and military centers. Woz explains that the debris is being accelerated and guided by trapar waves - the Scub Coral itself is targeting the towers in retaliation for the attack on the Command Cluster. In the midst of the destruction, all the young women affected by the Desperation Disease are miraculously restored to a normal state of mind, and their compac drives turn into books with all of their pages left blank.

Upon discovering the massive hole in the Tian Shan Mountains, Holland orders the Gekko and Super Izumo to set course for the mountains once more. Dewey orders the Galaxy into the airspace underneath the crust, and orders the rest of the military to stay above the surface and hold off the Coralian antibodies for 1,246 seconds, the estimated lifetime of the antibodies. Holland and Jurgens deduce that this means that there is something under the hole that Dewey wants no one else to see - the Nirvash. Concluding that the Nirvash must have survived the blast, Jurgens tells the Gekko to go after the Galaxy alone, while the Super Izumo holds off the military.

Underground, the Nirvash's Compac Drive glows blue, and it moves on its own to exactly where the Command Cluster had been. Eureka tells Renton that the Nirvash has decided to transform herself to replace what has been lost. However, shortly after activating the Amita Drive, the group is attacked by the Galaxy. Dewey intends to destroy both the Nirvash and the remains of the Command Cluster to ensure that a new Command Cluster cannot be formed. Fortunately, not long after the bombardment starts, the Gekko appears from above and opens fire on the Galaxy, which detects the Gekko's arrival just in time to raise its defenses and deflect the attack. Back up above, the Super Izumo is being left alone, mainly because the military is so occupied with surviving the Coralian antibodies' counterattack. A high-speed shuttle from Tresor, carrying Dr. Bear, suddenly arrives at the battlefield and demands the location of the Gekko.

After Renton tells them of their intention to become a new Command Cluster with the Nirvash, Holland orders the Gekko to cover him while he attacks the Galaxy with the 303. Although the Galaxy has state-of-the-art defenses that make it nearly invulnerable to ranged weaponry, Holland succeeds in disabling it by making a kamikaze run at the ship in the 303. Dewey orders his crew, including the Ageha children, to abandon ship.

Holland arrives at the Galaxy's bridge to find it empty, except for his brother Dewey. After a brief fight between the brothers, Dewey gains the upper hand and aims a gun at Holland to finish him off. Before Dewey can kill Holland, however, the Gekko rams the Galaxy's bridge. The Super Izumo, with Dr. Bear on board, tries to call off the attack, insisting that Dewey has laid a trap, but it is too late. Dewey reveals that he, too, has had a Compac Drive implanted in him, meaning that his fate would be one with the planet's. Maniacally, he fires his pistol into his temple.

Moments later, both Anemone and Eureka scream in pain as their collars activate, triggered by Dewey's death. Eureka bids goodbye to Renton, and disappears in a surge of energy. A huge tree-like formation forms above the Tian Shan mountains, surrounding a large spherical object.

Eureka and Anemone's collars were designed to inject a self-destruct program into the Scub Coral, should either one become the next Command Cluster. While Dominic succeeds in removing Anemone's collar, Eureka's is activated. Eureka, however, is resisting becoming the next Command Cluster, and she is acting as a beacon, calling out to Renton and the others. The sphere within the giant tree is continually flashing out pulses of brilliant blue light; these pulses synchronize perfectly with a pulsing signal visible in the Compac Drive of the Nirvash.

Holland forcibly pulls Renton out of his depression, and tells him and the children to try calling to Eureka through the Compac Radar. The Gekko lifts off, and sets course for a suitable point to engage its boosters. However, their way is blocked by an enormous force of antibody Coralians. Knowing that they are short of time, Gekkostate attempts to fight their way through, but in the fighting the Gekko loses her starboard booster. Renton tells Maurice to take care of his brother and sister while he goes to talk with the Nirvash, and Maurice gives Renton one of Eureka's old hairpins. When Renton shares his need of Eureka with the Nirvash, the Amita Drive activates, transforming the Nirvash into a completely new form. Renton appears on top of the Gekko, and before departing, Holland and Maurice share some words of inspiration with Renton. During this exchange, Maurice even calls Renton "Papa." Lifted by their words and the thought of Eureka, Renton annihilates the attacking Coralian force in a single blast, and departs at high speed for Eureka.

At the sphere above the Tian Shan Mountains, Renton meets resistance, but he breaks through and finds Eureka inside. He tells her that if she has decided to leave herself behind as a Coralian, he will put aside his own humanity. They are ready to become one with the planet, but as the massive structure breaks apart, Nirvash ejects them from its body, telling them that their memories were now a part of its soul, and it can finally achieve enlightenment. It tells Renton and Eureka to go and be an example to everyone living on the Earth, that humans can indeed coexist with Coralians. As the sphere breaks apart in a flurry of trapars, fissures open in Scub Coral's surface, breaking it apart and revealing the Earth beneath.

As the stunned crew on the Gekko watches, Gonzy informs them that this is the Second Summer of Love, and that humans and Coralians will avoid the Limit of Questions and coexist in peace by existing in different universes. He asserts that evolution may have more than one path after all. After revealing that he is also a Coralian, Gonzy vanishes from sight.

This section covers the final part of episode 50.

One year later, Maurice, Maeter, and Linck's adoption (and Eureka's, by her relationship with Renton and the children) into the Thurston family is official. When Maurice asks Axel at a diner if their adoption was too much trouble, Axel replies that at that moment they were celebrating the children's inclusion into the family with a Thurston tradition — a big burger dinner.

That evening they hurry to the new "Renton Thurston Height of Hope Park" to see the moon, now engraved with the undeniable love between Renton and Eureka.

And somewhere on the Earth, a blue light and red light pulsate in harmony.

The picture fades to the final frame^[36] of the series, a hand drawn picture of the new Thurston family (Renton, Eureka, Axel, and the kids) standing with each other in a field.

[edit] Manga vs. anime

The Eureka Seven manga was produced after the initial production of the anime. What is most notable is that the manga is not identical to the anime but instead features different events and character traits, though the plot appears to be along the same line. The plot, however, begins to deviate heavily closer to the end of the series and ends in a completely different way.

In the manga:

• Renton is untalented at lifting, even after joining Gekkostate.
• Renton is a skilled engineer, almost the same level as his grandfather, Axel.
• When asked by Eureka to come along onboard the Moonlight to do maintenance on the Nirvash, Renton hesitates about it, ending up with Eureka calling him strange.
• Renton didn't swear to protect Eureka and become her strength in battle like he did in the anime.
• Renton pilots the Nirvash in the front seat almost immediately and pulls off the Cut-Back Drop Turn in it as opposed to on a ref board; Eureka also feels no animosity towards his ability.
• Renton was not haunted by his sin of killing the KLF pilots while Eureka did not feel guilty or sad for the killings of human beings by her own kind.
• Upon learning that Eureka is not an ordinary human being, Renton was overcome by fear and disbelief.
• Holland shows none of the animosity he does towards Renton in the anime because in the manga it seems that Holland has already accepted that Renton is the true heir to Adrock's legacy, even before he boarded the Moonlight.
• Eureka did not have a conversation with Axel Thurston.
• Eureka did not show her first smile until she revealed to Renton about her past tragedy with the three kids and then Renton comforts her about it.
• Eureka's first smile seen is that of affection towards Renton while in the anime, she first smiled because she was amused by Renton near his burned down house.
• Eureka did not want Renton to join Gekkostate as badly as her anime counterpart (which is for the sake of Nirvash).
• Eureka did not have massive loss of hair and eyebrows at the same time that she did in the anime.
• Eureka realizes her feelings for Renton during her time in the Zone (Aerial Coralian Sphere), unlike her anime version which took Renton's abandoning ship to realize her feelings.
• Eureka fell for Renton for his good-natured character in the anime while in the manga, she fell for Renton because he saved her and has been nice to her.
• Eureka never gets angry at Renton.
• Eureka does not seem to show any devotion nor loyalty towards Holland.
• Eureka behaves more mature and pessimistic in the anime than her manga counterpart; she doesn't think and view positively about the world, being anti-social and distrusts people.
• Eureka was not bothered by the fact that her coralian identity is known to Renton and the entire Gekkostate.
• Eureka shows more care towards Renton's well-being while her anime counterpart worries more on whether she and Renton can remain together.
• Renton & Eureka did not promise each other to be together forever.
• Eureka did not show much enthusiasm in wanting to be with Renton as badly as her anime counterpart. (Eg. She's constantly saddened by the possibility of not being able to end up with Renton in the later part of the anime)
• Eureka was not disturbed by the scars made on her body while her anime counterpart wants to look pretty for Renton.
• Eureka did not grow any wings or had any green skin transformation at all.
• Eureka was remotely controllable by her creator, the Scab Coral, near the end of the manga. She could sense the scab coral "calling" out to her while this wasn't the case for her anime counterpart.
• Every member of Gekkostate (possibly excluding Mischa, Ken-Goh, and Gonzy) lifts, though some are poor at it.
• Holland has a love for coffee and also smokes.
• Anemone has an obsession with things that look "tasty", such as cakes. She also comments on how people look delicious and she wants to eat them (including Renton and Eureka).
• Adrock Thurston did not die in the Summer of Love incident but is stated to have been murdered by Dewey.
• Maeter is being portrayed as the leader-like figure among the three kids, and has a tendency to physically bash Renton even in front of Eureka.
• Maurice is more introverted in the manga, usually not appearing with his siblings at all. Near the end of the manga, he does however have a confrontation with Renton which is similar to the animes.
• Maurice did not recall that Eureka was the one who killed his parents.
• The three kids are still protective of their mother(Eureka) against Renton in the manga while near the end of the anime, they no longer have any objections towards Renton & Eureka's relationship.
• Gonzy talks more often than his anime counterpart, even opening his eyes few times unlike the counterpart who only opened his eyes in the end.
• The KLFs and LFOs have no vehicle mode.
• The Nirvash TypeZero has no fond feelings towards Renton as "she" did in the anime version and the Nirvash is more "alive" in the anime. (eg. it responds frequently to Eureka and Renton, usually telling them that she feels happy).

[edit] Plot differences

In the manga:

• Eureka did not crash land on Renton's house, thus she did not use the flamethrower to "cremate" his belongings.
• The word "EUREKA" does not appear in Renton's compac drive. Instead, it appears on the Nirvash's computer screen when the Seventh Swell is about to occur.
• When Axel gives Renton the Amita Drive, Renton is not told the name but simply that it is an upgrade for the Nirvash. Axel also formally gives permission for Renton to go off and try to become a hero or whatever he wants.
• There has been no mention of the Izumo crew, Miss Tiptory, or Charles and Ray Beams.
• Dominic did not join in the pursuit of Gekkostate to Bellforest in the beginning of the series.
• Dominic was adopted by Dewey in a war-torn area.
• Dominic gets to ride on the Nirvash with Renton to rescue their respective lovers.
• Renton successfully reaches Eureka to deliver her the Amita Drive without getting knocked off by the turbulence generated from the Nirvash. He also tries to deny his confession to Eureka when he first says the words "I love you!" to Eureka as he feels embarrassed about it.
• Renton did not faint after activating the Seven Swell for the first time.
• The recurring phrase in the anime "Don't beg for things, do it yourself, or else you won't get anything" which was passed down to Renton was not mentioned at all in the manga.
• The Gekkostate does not locate and then engage their first Coralian but, rather, it appears in front of Renton, Dominic, Eureka, and Anemone (the last two are abducted by it) as an amorphous sphere of bio-matter. From this point, the plot deviates significantly from the anime.
• Holland frequently refers to Adrock Thurston as his "master" while Eureka did not acknowledge Adrock as her "father".
• Holland did not fall for Diane or even mention of them meeting at all, and as a result, Talho is not jealous of her.
• Holland went to the Ciudades del Cielo mission to kill the Vodarek people to avenge the murder of his "master" Adrock (which is false info by Dewey).
• Holland, not Talho, personally tells Renton the goal of Gekkostate is to stop the Ageha plan.
• Holland did not ride the Terminus typeB303 "Devilfish" at all.
• Eureka is not seen lifting at all, though she carries a ref board with her.
• The anime version has Buddism references which involves the Vodarek people's teachings and Eureka performing a Buddha-like prayer for "dead items".
• Eureka does not ride the Nirvash to kill the Vodarek people in Ciudades del Cielo, but she carries a machinegun to shoot "targets" who are living people.
• Anemone is not given typeTheEND until after her encounter with the Coralian sphere. Thus, her meeting with Eureka and Renton is prior to the sphere's appearance was in person.
• Eureka, not Renton, initiates the search for Pancha fruit, and Talho accompanies her for the quest instead of Renton and Matthieu.
• In the manga, Eureka fought Anemone on her own and lost miserably while in the anime, both Renton & Eureka fought all the three fights together against Anemone and never lost to her.
• The manga portrayed that Eureka was born from a large egg created by the scab Coral and Adrock was the one who discovered her, saying she was a gift from the gods. (according to a dialogue from Dewey in volume 4) However, the anime did not show any details on how Eureka was un-earthed from the Scab Coral.
• Holland states that Renton was chosen by the "world" which is the scab Coral but in the anime, it was Eureka who do the choosing of her partner herself. Renton was not chosen for the purpose of being Eureka's partner in the manga.
• Axel Thurston would later board the Gekkostate in order to repair the Nirvash typeZERO which was ripped apart in a confrontation with Nirvash typeTheEND. This battle damage also necessitated the upgrade to the Spec2.
• Anemone tries out the Amita Drive with typeTheEND, but the experiment fails miserably.
• Though Dewey still seeks to destroy the Coralians, one of his main goals seems to be obtaining the Amita Drive.
• The Amita Drive can be removed from the Compac Drive.
• Dewey manages to stab a badly injured Holland's hand with his sword. (His sword broke in the anime during their fight.) Dewey sheds tears for what he deems as having a pathetic brother.
• The Vodarek people have a comparatively minor role in the story.
• The Nirvash Spec2 is designed by Renton instead of the scientists at Tresor.
• Eureka goes through a physical transformation in the sickbay of the Moonlight, which a shocked Renton witnesses.
• In the anime, Renton found out about Eureka's identity as a Coralian through Talho; in the manga, Renton found out by himself.
• Renton does not leave the Moonlight, though he has attempted to do so after repairing the Nirvash but was halted by the Federation's ambush.
• The Great Wall never made an appearance in the manga's visuals or dialogue.
• The anti-body Coralians do not have the limited 1246 seconds active time period.
• Renton & Eureka never traveled to Earth.
• Eureka was the only human-form Coralian in the manga story; Gonzy was formerly known as one of the three Sages in the manga plot.
• There were less development of the relationship between Renton & Eureka compared to the anime (eg They did not go through trials and hardships together as a couple like they did in the anime since in the manga, Eureka was taken away by the Scab Coral shortly after Renton & Eureka became a couple.)^{[citation needed]}.
• Diane is almost non-existent. Renton only mentions her once in the first chapter, didn't do any monologuing to her and never reunites with her in the manga.
• The Ray-Out magazine did not play any role in the story as it did in the anime.
• The compact drive was made insignificant or play minor role in the manga. (A lot of the things in the anime were linked to the compact drive, like for example, despair illness, reacting to human thoughts and emotions, having a compact drive inside the chest of a person, compact drive displaying various colours and messages, etc)
• The Moonlight did not fly up to space at all. Thus no combat with the AFX spaceships that fire the ground piercing missiles at the Scab Coral from space.
• Ruri, the heroine of the Eureka Seven TR1: New Wave PlayStation 2 game, plays a part in the manga story.
• While Dewey Novak is portrayed as the series' antagonist during the first part of the series, the Coralians themselves take over the role closer to the end of the series. Dewey dies a rather quick death after a showdown with Holland (although Holland loses an arm in this face-off) and is essentially never mentioned again past that point.
• The typeTheEND does not seem to require any special abilities from the pilot—Dominic successfully pilots it himself in Volume 5.
• The Coralians' intention was to introduce Renton's DNA code into themselves to further their evolution process and then depart for another planet, abandoning Earth altogether and leaving it for dead. In contrast, the Coralians' initial aim in the anime was to merge with humanity to become one and continue existing on Earth. Thus making Eureka's purpose of her existence different between the anime and manga.
• It is explained that the origin of the Coralians actually as ordinary coral reef that had began to evolve to survive the harsh ocean environment.
• Every Coralian, including the Coralian Core, the Scab Coral, and Eureka herself, disappears and Earth reverts to the form it was in before the Scab Coral took over the Earth, with no trapar waves at the end.
• Talho does not become pregnant with Holland's child until the epilogue of the manga, which shows how the characters are doing two years after the main events of the series. Her looks is identical to what she looked like in the later part of the anime.
