[edit] Volume 1

Hayate is given a job as a butler by Nagi Sanzenin, who is the heiress of the Sanzenin family and extremely rich, after saving her from kidnappers and falling unconscious from injuries that were garnered during the rescue. He has an embarrassing incident with Maria after regaining consciousness involving the bathtub of Nagi's mansion and a misconception of being in the afterlife. Following this, he accidentally reveals to Maria that he was trying to kidnap Nagi, and he pledges to protect Nagi with his life when she enters the room, embarrassing her because of her misconception that he confessed his love to her. Maria is ordered to fire him by Seishoru Klaus, the head butler, though she is reluctant to do this due to Hayate's unfortunate circumstances and amazing cleaning skills. However, after finding Nagi's self-drawn manga in the study, which Maria was supposed to tell him to avoid, and calling it a picture diary to Nagi, Hayate leaves the mansion after misinterpreting his Ojou-sama's orders. This leads to him being captured by the yakuza, and being saved by Nagi, who pay's off Hayate's debt with the yakuza. Hayate is then presented with a repayment plan covering forty years of working for Nagi.

The next day, Klaus, who wants to fire Hayate, arranges for a strength-aptitude test to make sure that Hayate is strong enough to protect Nagi. Hayate is fights against the Nursing Robot Eight, and wins by electrocuting both himself and Eight. This convinces Klaus that, for the time being, Hayate can stay. The following morning, Hayate encounters Tama, a white tiger from Africa, while going to wake up Nagi. No one can control Tama except for Nagi and Maria, revealed with Klaus is slashed in the face by Tama. Nagi and Klaus for Tama and Hayate to fight by threatening him with being fired, but the fight is interrupted by Maria. Tama and Hayate had been fighting in her flower garden, which she had taken great care to cultivate. Using her amazing insight ability, she deduces exactly what happened and proceeds to treat Hayate's wounds while Nagi and Klaus await their punishment. After telling Hayate how Tama came to be living with Nagi, which was similar to how Hayate came to be living with Nagi, Hayate remarks to Tama how similar they are and lucky they are to have been adopted by Nagi. Tama though, having learned the human language, tells Hayate that he shouldn't be classified as a similar type of loser as Hayate, and goes on to tell him to die because Hayate's face has "poor written all over it."

Sometime later, Hayate is forced to crossdress in a catgirl uniform by Nagi and Maria, and is attacked by Tama, who he beats in a single move. He is also attacked by Klaus, and both times, he is mistaken for a girl. After the incident, back in his regular butler uniform, Hayate is asked by Maria whether he like older or younger women. This is because Maria knows that Nagi has fallen in love with Hayate, though Hayate himself doesn't know this. Hayate hasn't yet told Nagi that he was trying to kidnap her when they first met, and himself has a crush on Maria, leading him to remark that older women make better love partners. Nagi wants to help Maria following the early morning battle that killed Maria's flowers, and agrees to go get new flowers. However, this leads to a talk in a secret backyard flower garden where Nagi believes for sure that Hayate has confessed his love, while Hayate really meant that she was important to him because she saved his life. The chapter ends with Nagi picking a flower, which leads to the cliff that the garden was on breaking, with Hayate falling off. They return to the mansion with a single flower, and a muddy, dirty Hayate.

[edit] Volume 2

Tama and Hayate meet in the entrance hall while Nagi and Maria get ready for bed. Maria remarks that today was a chaotic and messy day, just as Eight makes a re-entrance through the window. Eight is back for revenge because his creator and the person he loves, Dr. Shiori Makimura, said that his design was bad from the beginning following his defeat by Hayate. Hayate feels that this is similar to what he went through on Christmas Eve, but Eight attempts to kill him anyway. During this time, Maria and Nagi are in bed, talking about what's going on, and they find out that Eight had been upgraded to version 8.1, which gave him a corrected file. Hayate and Tama are saved by Dr. Makimura, who arrives because Eight was thrown in the wrong trash pile. She takes him away to be dismantled. The next morning, Nagi asks whether Hayate defeated Eight with the Kamehameha, to which Hayate replies jokingly that he isn't at that level yet. Over the course of the volume, Hayate meets Nagi's relative Sakuya and learns that Nagi's grandfather(who Nagi dislikes intensely) has placed a bounty of sorts; whoever can make Nagi cry and apologize (for anything) will inherit the family fortune that would otherwise be Nagi's. He gives Hayate a necklace which Hayate wears. Hayate is attacked by Gilbert (who we learn in the next volume is Sakuya's cousin) and defeats him easily. Hayate reveals to Maria that his ultimate dream is to own a 3LDK, which is a kind of apartment that is highly desirable in Asia. While on an errand, Hayate meets a girl at the same coke machines where he first met Nagi and "rescues" her from a bunch of black-suited men who actually work for her. This girl turns out to be Isumi, who is one of Nagi's best friend and is also a rich oligarch. Like Nagi, Isumi is taken by Hayate's kindness and takes a liking to him. Hayate becomes sick because Nagi locked him out of the house; while trying to cook for him, she mistakes detergent for cooking oil, but Hayate forces himself to eat her cooking regardless. Nagi tries to kiss Hayate; it doesn't work out. At night, Maria reveals to Hayate the story of how Isumi and Nagi met. The volume ends with a mysterious guest called Wataru and his maid Saki appear in the mansion.

[edit] Volume 3

It is revealed that Wataru is actually Nagi's fiance from an arraigned marriage, even though they don't like each other at all; Wataru is actually in love with Isumi. Angry that Isumi is much more interested in Hayate than in him, Wataru challenges Hayate to a duel, which Hayate throws to make Wataru look strong. However, Isumi sees through this and bluntly states so out loud, which results in Wataru throwing a tantrum and leaving. Feeling the need to apologize to Wataru, Hayate tries to take the subway to apologize in person to him. Nagi and Isumi are fascinated with the idea of an underground train (it's implied they're both too rich to be aware of the existence of subways) and tag along. Isumi gets lost immediately after leaving the masion. Nagi and Hayate find her inside an under-construction tunnel where they're attacked by rats. Isumi scares them off with a charm (explained in volume 5) and everyone goes home, having forgotten about apologizing to Wataru. Hayate tries again (by himself), and runs into Saki while in town. It turns out that Wataru lives in and runs a video rental store taht specializes in rare animes. Unlike Nagi and Isumi, Wataru is not rich and his parents only want him to marry Nagi for her money. Hayate tries to become a member of the rental store, but it's revealed that Hayates father had once been a member; instead of joining, Hayate gets an additional 1,500,000 yen of late-return fees added to his existing debt. Sakuya and Nagi get caught up in the latest fad: Mushiking. Nagi always loses and throws a tantrum; eventually Sakuya and Nagi face off with Hayate as the prize for the winner, they play so much that Hayate is completely forgotten and ignored. Nagi takes Hayate to her personal amusement park that her grandfather bought to mock her; Nagi is too short to ride any of the rides. The only thing they can both go into is the haunted house. The robot Eight tries to attack Nagi again inside the haunted house, but the long-suffering mascots who work inside the park, overjoyed that someone is finally visiting, gang together and beat up Eight. Tama breaks the boiler while he and Hayate are in the bath and causes Hayate to almost flash Maria. Tama convinces Hayate to try and fix the boiler to atone for his shame. The whole boiler system breaks while Maria and Hayate are inside (thanks to Tama again) and the boiler room floods. Hayate saves Maria and all is forgiven. Isumi comes over again. This attracts Wataru, and Hayate and Tama see him taking a sniff of Isumi's stole (a garment girls use on their shoulders). Hayate prevents Tama from spreading internet rumors about Wataru and gains Wataru's trust. Sensing an evil spirit inside the necklace that Hayate wears, Isumi does something that reseals the necklace that has her get up very close to Hayate. In front of everyone, she tells Hayate that she likes him, which stuns Wataru and Nagi. Nagi is kept up all night thinking about Isumi's apparent confession to Hayate. Maria tells Nagi to ask Hayate directly, which she does. Due to the vague wording that Hayate uses, Nagi believes that Hayate is "playing with" both Isumi and Sakuya (Hayate was referring to Mushiking)and runs off to Wataru's house in a rage. Hayate goes to Isumi's mansion to ask if she knows where Nagi is; Sneaking around, Nagi and Wataru see Hayate helping Isumi get something out of her eye, and Nagi's melodramatic mind once again interprets this wrong. In a rage, she offers to sell Hayate to Isumi for 150 million yen; Isumi accepts immediately. Nagi tries working at Wataru's video rental and its not working out. Meanwhile, Hayate seems dazed and confused in Isumi's mansion. Maria comes and compares Nagi to Hayate's parents; Nagi realizes how cruel she was to Hayate and starts crying, shocking everyone. Maria goes to check on Hayate and finds him in a garden with Isumi, where Isumi tells Hayate that he reminds her of someone who departed this world recently and begs him to stay by her. As Maria tries to figure out what kind of manga genre Hayate the Combat Butler is, Gilbert shows up at Wataru's store. Gilbert devises a plot that Nagi agrees to; they'll fake a kidnapping and see if Hayate responds. Sakuya arrives and tells Nagi she was "playing" Mushiking with Hayate and not "playing" in the way that Nagi thought they were. Gilbert uses a large robot (made by the same scientist who created Eight) which malfunctions and tries to actually hurt Nagi. Nagi screams out Hayate's name; Hayate suddenly disappears from where he was with Maria, Isumi, and Wataru. Isumi casually says that Hayate has gone to save Nagi. Nagi is about to be punched by the robot when Hayate appears and saves her.

[edit] Volume 4

Hayate saves Nagi from the robot and declares that even if Nagi hates him, he will protect her forever. Hayate easily defeats the robot with a machine gun and Nagi asks him to be her butler again (she still doesn't apologize). Meanwhile, it turns out the person who Hayate reminded Isumi of was a cartoon superhero who had seemingly died but returned the following episode. A new school year is starting at Hakuou Academy and Nagi doesn't want to go. Bringing her to school, Hayate and Nagi get lost and are attacked by a pack of cats. Later, Isumi comes over and says that she can tell Nagi is in love with Hayate. However, Isumi also thinks Wataru is in love with Nagi, which is hardly the case. Hayate tries to deliver lunch to Nagi one day but is held up by the semi-competent school guard. He gives her the slip and then runs into a girl who had climbed up into a tree. The girl, Hinagiku Katsura, was trying to save a baby bird from a crow. She jumps down from the tree and Hayate softens the fall. As thanks, she takes Hayate up to the Hakuou clock tower, where only student council members are allowed. Hayate and Hinagiku seem mutually interested in each other. Hinagiku allows Hayate to call her by her first name because theres someone else on campus that has her last name. The door guard shows up and attacks Hayate; it turns out that shes Yukiji Katsura, Hinagiku's sister and also a teacher/guard at Hakuou. Hinagiku and Yukiji duel with swords and Yukiji steals the bento that Hayate was supposed to give Nagi. However, she almost falls over the ledge of the clock tower but Hayate saves her. The lunch box, however, falls to the ground and cannot be saved. Maria gives Hayate money to buy a cell phone. Remembering that Hinagiku told him to let himself be selfish once in awhile, Hayate takes a detour afterward to visit his old high school. One of his female friends from volume 1, Nishizawa, greets him and violently lashes out at anyone who speaks badly of Hayate. Hayate realizes that he's a dropout and leaves, but Nishizawa confesses to Hayate and asks if he'll go out with her. Hayate tries to respond, but for some reason an image of Nagi flashes in his mind. He then tells Nishizawa that he's only interested in 2D (fictional) characters. When he gets home, Nagi takes his new phone and enters her info on it. Meanwhile, it is shown that Nishizawa, despite punching Hayate after his response to her, has not given up. Nagi decides to enroll Hayate into Hakuou Academy. Prior to his exam, Yukiji distracts him by making him fight with a bunch of monkeys over a banana. Hayate takes the exam and Nagi, convinced that he will pass, throws a lavish party for him. Meanwhile, Hayate fails by one point, and the school principal remarks if he was more calm he would probably have passed. The principal orders Yukiji to deliver the bad news to Hayate. Feeling too much guilt, Yukiji begs Hinagiku to come along with her to give Hayate the bad news. When she sees the huge party, she gets cold feet and lies to Hayate. Hinagiku tells Nagi, and they both yell at Yukiji for distracting Hayate. Hayate hears that he failed and disappears. Maria finds him by the garden pond and reveals that she submitted a letter of recommendation on Hayate's behalf, and gives him a Hakuou student ID. Hayate attends Hakuou as a student for the first time and finds that there are other butlers there just like him. An unnamed butler comes up to him with his master, Master Tiger, actually serving the butler instead of the other way around. The unnamed butler makes it known that he is aware of the ways to get Nagi's inheritance. The butler steals Hayates tie and warns him that he is a first-class butler, unlike Hayate. Later, Nagi tries to kiss Hayate again, but Hinagiku interrupts her. Hinagiku reveals that she is the leader of the school kendo club and that Nagi once tried out for it, but the kendo armor was too heavy for her. Wanting Nagi to be active in school clubs, Hayate accompanies Nagi and Hinagiku to the kendo club, where the members are shocked that Hinagiku lets Hayate call her by her first name. A member of the kendo club called Azumamiya challenges Hayate for no reason, but then backs off and orders his "combat butler" to face Hayate instead.

[edit] Volume 5

Azumamiya's butler is named Nonohara; however, Nonohara attacks Azumamiya for being a coward instead of a man. As Hayate wonders whether a butler can hit their master, the butler who stole his tie from the previous day appears and tells Hayate that a butler's duty is not just to serve, but also to rear their masters to be outstanding members of society. Hinagiku stops the beating and tells Nonohara that Azumamiya is weak and needs protection. Stung by those comments, Azumamiya decides to fight Nagi while Nonohara fights Hayate. Hinagiku again intervenes and steps in as a replacement for Nagi; she defeats Azumamiya without much effort. Hayate is then subject to a huge and powerful attack from Nonohara called a "mortal blow" which acidentally hits Azumamiya. As Nonhara fretts, Hayate defeats him from behind. At the end of all this, Nagi decides that she's not interested in the kendo club anyway because the equipment smells of sweat.

Nishizawa is in Wataru's video store returning some action movies she borrowed. Wataru recommends that she rent the first season of Sailor Moon, but Nishizawa leaves without checking anything out. Hayate was also in the shop; Nishizawa sees him exit the store and chases him, dismayed that his walking speed is faster than her running speed. She chases him until she gets to the gate of Nagi's mansion, where she is apprehended by the security for snooping around. While security tries to confirm who she is with Maria, Nishzawa escapes and runs into Tama on the mansion grounds. As expected, she runs in terror, while Tama chases her because his blunted killer instincts makes him want to lick his prey. At the last minute Hayate, who is practicing making his own "mortal blow", flies out and kicks Tama away. Before Nishizawa can explain herself to Hayate, Nagi shows up the two girls have a stare-down, which Nishizawa loses. Vowing to bring a stronger metaphoric animal next time, Nishizawa leaves and goes to Wataru's store to rent the first season of Sailor Moon. Nagi questions Hayate on whether he's going anywhere, and Hayate responds that he's not.

Hayate asks Maria if she has a mortal blow; Maria replies that she doesn't. Nagi joins in and the conversation about mortal blows tangents to a point where Maria gets irritated. Hayate then goes to Hakuou at night to get Nagi's notebook. Once there, he's assaulted by Yukiji and finds out that she lives on campus so that she can save money because she doesn't get an allowance from her family anymore. Hayate meets three of his classmates, Akigaze, Miki, and Izumi, who are all staying overnight with Yukiji studying (its also implied they're student council members). Hayate moves on to look for the notebook but accidentally steps into the old school building instead of the new one. Hinagiku arrives at Yukijis room and hears that Hayate is wandering around on campus. Worried that Hayate would get lost, she runs after him into the old school building where shes attacked by a ghost in the form of a human-anatomy sculpture. Cornered, she screams out Hayates name, and Hayate immediately appears and defeats the ghost. After composing herself, Hinagiku finds time to flirt with Hayate; Hayate notes that Hinagiku is similar to Nagi in her refusal to lose at anything. Hayate figures that he can use "spirit force" to create a mortal blow, a point which Maria also thinks of at home. The same ghost from just then attacks again, but this time Hinagiku grabs a pipe and beats it. The ghost tries to "transform", but ends up breaking into pieces. As Hinagiku and Hayate leave, Isumi is seen with her servants entering the old school to exorcise the ghost. Hayate returns home and gives Nagi her notebook.

Hayate goes into the Sanzenin family library, which Nagi had been using as a den to read mangas and play video games. Maria then helps Hayate find a book called "How To Perform Mortal Blows" which was written by Himegami, the butler previous to Hayate. Nagi and Hayate go outside to practice spirit force, but once Nagi sees a chapter which claims to help the person you like return your feelings, she forbids Hayate from reading the book and instead runs to to try and read it herself. Distracted by the first recommendation of the chapter, Nagi runs off a cliff but has her fall padded by Hayate. Nagi finds the spirit force section Hayate wants, but then Hayate lets slip that he wants to learn spirit force for the sake of Hinagiku. Greatly angered, Nagi burns the book and then hits Hayate. Hayate then asks Maria if she knows any mortal blows to defeat Nagi's temper.

Nagi temporarily runs away and fumes about Hayate paying attention to Hinagiku. Maria and Hayate go outside to look for her. On the street, Nagi runs in Nishizawa. They recognize each other, but when Nagi tries to blow her off, Nishizawa challenges her to a karaoke sing-off. Nagi agrees, and the two girls go while Maria and Hayate tail them. While Nagi marvels at how small the karaoke room is, Maria and Hayate rent the room behind them. Nishizawa goes first and scores a 35 (machines in Japan give you scores out of 100). Nagi goes next, and it turns out she has a wonderful voice and scores a perfect 100. Nishzawa ends up paying for all the expenses and vows to challenge Nagi again at something else. Nagi responds that she will just beat Nishizawa at that too. Meanwhile, Maria and Hayate are still singing in their room.

Wataru notices that Saki seems depressed and deduces that shes acting this way because nobody celebrated her coming-of-age ceremony. Wataru feels guilty that he also forgot, he borrows a huge amount of money from Nagi to buy Saki a lavish furisode. However, Nagi ups the ante by calling Isumi and telling her to go to Wataru's shop. Faced with the decision of giving the furisode to Isumi or Saki, Wataru chooses not to give it to Isumi and to keep it for Saki.

Nagi decides that she needs to be proactive in making Hayate love her and only her. She decides to play the "hard-to-get" card and tries to develop a colder attitude toward Hayate, although Hayate's kind nature makes being intentionally cold to him difficult. To make it so Hayate will have to depend on her, she takes Hayate and Maria with her on a cruise on Sakuya's Titanic-esque cruise ship. As Hayate gets excited, Nagi succeeds in blowing him off once when he asks her a question. As Sakuya and Nagi come to the conclusion that a terrorist hijacking is the only thing that can sink the ship, terrorists hijack the ship. Meanwhile, Hayate is wandering alone and is lost in the vast ship. Coincidentally, Isumi, who was also invited to the cruise, is also wandering alone, lost as usual. On deck, Klaus and Sakuya's butlers easily defeat the terrorists, who reveal that their target was actually Hayate. In desperation, the terrorists blow a hole in the hull of the ship. Hayate is cut in the head and also has to save Isumi, who was being washed out of the ship by the ocean. Nagi goes downstairs to look for Hayate and finds him in between the jaws of a shark. Nagi tries to help, but as soon as she gets in the water another shark assaults her. Hayate then takes the shark who's biting down on him and judo flips it onto the second shark. Spent of energy, Hayate collapses and sinks into the ocean. He is saved by Klaus, who coldly tells him not thank him for it. Being ignored while Klaus and Hayate talk, Nagi wonders why Hayate seems to be turned on by Klaus' uncaring attitude.

Spoilers end here.
