Popotan (ぽぽたん?) is a Japanese anime television series by Studio Shaft. It is also a PlayStation 2 game and hentai PC game (eroge). Popotan is created by Akio Watanabe under the alias Poyoyon Rock. The story revolves around three sisters — Ai (the oldest), Mai (a teenager), and Mii (the youngest) -- their maid, Mea (rendered by some as Mare), and a white ferret named Unagi, as they travel through time searching for a flower called "popotan". Their bodies and time-clocks are connected to a mansion, which they live in, and which also is the vehicle that allows them travel through time. Every time they 'travel', they go five years into the future.
While it is comedy and has a theme geared towards a younger age, there is periodic nudity in each episode in the anime and full nudity and intercourse in the PC game. The series has received acclaim for its surprisingly emotional storyline and strongly fleshed-out central characters. Twelve episodes of the anime were produced. The anime is licensed for DVD release in North America by Geneon Animation USA. The first DVD was released on 12/07/2004 and this third and final DVD was released on 4/26/2005.
"Popotan" is a nonsense word that is similar to the Japanese word for dandelion, "tanpopo". It is almost literally like saying "liondandy". It also uses the flipped "tan" to essentially call the dandelions by name; "-chan" is a suffix added to names, sometimes used as a fond diminutive, and a child's pronunciation often renders it to "-tan". Thus, "liondandy" becomes "Lion-chan".
