Porter Garden Telescope
This picture was taken in July 2004 from an exhibition at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, California. There is a ghostly reflection of a person in front of the glass case holding this exhibit.
The caption of the exhibit said:
Porter Garden Telescope
By Russell W. Porter, American Telescope Designer
Telescope manufactured by the Jones & Lamson Machine Co.
Russell W. Portal was a telescope designer, an artist, and an explorer. The most esthetically pleasing of his telescope designs is this Garden Telescope. It is a good example of his skillful blending of art, science, and engineering. He wanted to create a telescope that would be as ornamental in a garden as it would be useful for observing the surrounding landscape or celestial objects. He envisioned it as a permanent fixture in the garden, like a sundial. Less than a hundred were made, because of the cost — these telescopes originally cost as much as a new car.
