Poundcake is a Van Halen song and the opening track on their 1991 album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Poundcake was the first song to be released as a single from the album making #1 on U.S. Mainstream Rock charts and #74 in the U.K. single charts. The introduction to the song features some quiet talking between members of band and guitarist Eddie Van Halen running a drill across his guitar strings, a trick many people believed was masterminded by Eddie but was in fact done earlier in the same year by Mr. Big guitarist Paul Gilbert who agreed to let Eddie (his biggest influence as a guitarist) use the technique after hearing him do it. The technique can be highly dangerous as friction between the metal guitar strings and drill bit can cause the strings to heat up and touching them can result in a burn. The music video for Poundcake shows Eddie using the technique with a drill painted in his trademark red, black and white stripes. The rest of the music video cuts between scenes of the band performing the song and a woman spying on a group of supermodels, the drill continues to feature through the video including a scene where the woman is pinned to the door as the drill drills through it inches away from her. The song was used by Rob Van Dam as his entrance music, when he debuted in ECW in 1996.
