Poznań International Fair

Poznań International Fair (PIF, Polish: Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie, MTP) is an international trade fair in Poznań, Poland. It is the oldest trade fair in Poland, with the first one taking place in 1921. It is the 21st largest fair in the world, and recently it had the area of 150,000 m².

In 1911 Poznań was the site of East German Exhibition. For this event the characteristic Lower Silesian Tower (project by Hans Poelzig) was build. On the fundation of this tower stands one of moder symbols of PIF - Iglica (Spire, pavilion 11).
The idea of organization of modern fair by Polish manufactures and merchants was born during the congress of Union of Merchant Asociations in Poznań in 1917. Union was organisation of Polish merchants of Greater Poland end Eastern Pommerania. Fair from the begining had to be international and organised like Leipzig Trade Fair. First Poznań Trade Fair (I Targ Poznański), as it was called, took place in 1921 (from 28 May till 5 June), and first chairman was Mieczysław Krzyżankiewicz. First realy international fair took place in 1925. Before that only Polish companies, companies form Free City of Gdańsk and foreign companies with branches in Poland, that were represented by Polish citizen could participate in fairs, but in 1924 agreements were signed with companies form Czechoslovakia, France, Yugoslavia, Latvia, Germany, Romania, Switzerland and Sweden. In 1927 PIF was accepted as member of UFI.
Intensive develepment of 1920s was crowned by the huge General National Exhibition (Polish: Powszechna Wystawa Krajowa, PWK, PeWuKa) of 1929 that was visited by 4,5 mln people. Later this same Great Depression was started. Despite of difficult economical situation, PIF survived and in the end of interbellum PIF was one of largest companies of its kind in Europe. During World War II company ceazed its existance. Infrastructure of PIF was confiscated, and turned into factory of Focke-Wulf, which made halls of PIF military target for Allied air forces. Destruction was completed in fights of 1945. During the war 85% af piervous PIF was destroyed, but despite of infrastructure problems, first afterwar exhibition took place in 1946 and one year later, in 1947, PIF returnd to international character. Since this date PIF is still growing and developing its exhibition space.
Today PIF the largest trade fair organizer in Poland (by over 50% of total exhibition area and over 60% of exhibitors). It is the 21st largest fair in the world; with about 50 trade events taking place on its area every year. Area of PIF is over 110,000 m² indoor and 35,000 m² outdoor exhibition space. PIF is state-owned company - 60% of shares belongs to Polish State Treasury, and 40% to City of Poznań.
