In 2002, Samaritan’s Purse hosted Prescription for Hope, an unprecedented global Christian Conference on HIV/AIDS held in Washington, D.C. Since that time, Prescription for Hope has become a comprehensive HIV/AIDS program to strengthen the international Christian response to HIV/AIDS; mobilize private, church, corporate, and government resources; and develop a unified plan to defeat HIV/AIDS. Our goal is to reach more than 2 million people by 2010.

Through the following programs, Prescription for Hope is empowering Christians worldwide to respond to HIV/AIDS in their communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Abstinence and Behavior Change Programs for Youth

- Across the globe, people aged 15-24 have some of the highest rates of HIV infection, and the numbers continue to rise. To combat this trend, Prescription for Hope is working with USAID President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funding in a program called MET that mobilizes, equips, and trains older youth and Christian leaders who work with youth to prevent new HIV infections, under the theme is “There is Hope.” Utilizing the MET approach, Samaritan's Purse works in more than 480 communities in Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. During the five-year period, youth leaders, and parents will benefit from HIV/AIDS awareness messages, training in basic home care for people living with HIV/AIDS, micromedia campaigns, mentoring, and/or a life-skills and character-based curriculum. The program teaches all participants to initiate HIV/AIDS awareness aimed at youth, to involve youth in care programs for people living with HIV/AIDS in their own communities, and to mentor and teach life-skills to at-risk youth. The program emphasizes building the capacity of pastors, parents, and youth leaders to speak about HIV/AIDS in a culturally accepted and dynamic way within churches.

- The MET goal is to mobilize, equip and train youth and church and community leaders who have frequent interactions with youth, with the ultimate goal of reducing new HIV infections among 10 to 24 year olds. This goal will be achieved through education, awareness, and community interaction activities with a focus on abstinence, fidelity, monogamy, increasing secondary abstinence, and basic home care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Samaritan’s Purse will reach over 1 million youth through direct programs with a variety of interventions and messages about HIV/AIDS and HIV prevention. Samaritan's Purse will also train approximately 19,200 grassroots leaders to facilitate youth awareness, abstinence, and care programs.

- Since the Prescription for Hope program began in 2002, Samaritan’s Purse has reached over 188,679 youth with messages of abstinence and faithfulness and trained over 9,260 pastors and community leaders through the MET program.
Workshops for Church Leaders

- Prescription for Hope offers workshops to church leaders of various backgrounds to teach them how to develop positive, nondiscriminatory, culturally relevant approaches to HIV/AIDS in their communities.
Support for Mission Hospitals

- Working through World Medical Mission, the medical arm of Samaritan’s Purse, Prescription for Hope supports HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, and treatment programs in mission hospitals worldwide.
Partnership with Grassroots Organizations

- Grassroots organizations provide a tremendous opportunity to reach communities with the message of Biblically based prevention and compassionate care. Prescription for Hope supports these organizations by giving them training and resources.
Integrated HIV Response Through Field Organizations

- Samaritan’s Purse field offices throughout the world incorporate HIV/AIDS programs into ongoing relief efforts.

Despite the alarming statistics surrounding the HIV/AIDS pandemic, there is hope. Christians hold the key to defeating this modern-day plague. We have an historic obligation, opportunity, position, and mandate in the battle against HIV/AIDS.
How You Can Pray
Would you join us in praying for a solution to the crisis? When we approach the Father in Christ’s name, we have confidence that He “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work with us” (Ephesians 3:20, NIV).
Please pray that:
• Christians would respond with the compassion of Jesus Christ to all who are affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis.
• The Lord would open doors for Biblically based prevention education to help stem the spread of the disease.
• God would use the HIV/AIDS ministry projects of Samaritan’s Purse to give immediate and eternal hope to those who are suffering.
