Prevention (magazine)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prevention magazine is a national U.S. healthy lifestyle publication that provides readers with information on topics such as food, nutrition, current health and medical news, and fitness. Published 12 times per year, Prevention is part of Rodale Press, based out of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, which also owns such titles at Backpacker, Best Life, Bicycling'', Men’s Health, Mountain Bike, Organic Gardening, Runner’s World, and Women’s Health.
First published in June 1950, the original issue of Prevention consisted of a collection of essays exclusively covering the subject of Polio. The focus of this edition, and of all issues to follow, was on the early prevention of diseases through a healthy lifestyle.
The idea to create Prevention originated with J.I. Rodale as a response to the popularity of health articles in his other publication, Organic Gardening. The purpose of J.I.’s new magazine was to translate jargon-heavy medical studies and new or developing health news into articles that could be easily understood by the average reader.
Prevention has a history of being the first national magazine to report on a number of groundbreaking findings. In 1952, it first revealed the connection between smoking and lung cancer to the general public. Two years later, the magazine printed an article establishing fish oils’ ability to help ward of heart disease. Ever since, Prevention has continued to premiere numerous health discoveries.
Since 1950, Prevention continued to expand its brand to include books, DVDs, 18 special interest titles every year, and a Web site, Prevention.com, which averages 1.2 million unique visitors a month.
As of January 2007, Prevention had a total audience of 11,002,000 readers in the U.S. with a median age of 52.8. In addition, the magazine produces 12 editions around the globe in countries such as Poland, Ukraine, India, Russia and eight Latin American countries.
Prevention’s main competitors include publications such as Fitness, Women’s Day, Health, Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens, More, Redbook, Family Circle, and Ladies’ Home Journal.
