The prisoners of Oz are a diverse group of inmates sentenced to prison for various crimes at various lengths. They are broken into ten groups: Aryans, Bikers, Homeboys, Italians, Latinos, Muslims, Gays, Christians, Irish and the Others which Emerald City Unit manager Tim McManus describes on the second episode in Season 2 all divided by belief and/or ethnicity. Most of the inmates are shown in McManus' unit Emerald City but some are shown throughout Unit B, the main general population unit. Each group does a different prison job, something that McManus and Warden Glynn state as mandatory in order to remain in the experimental cell block. Each job's supervising inmate is the head of their respective gang and tends to only employ their own gang members to work in that occupation. Some inmates such as the Muslims and Christians exist for reasons to rehabilitate their members through religion, some inmates such as the Italians and Homeboys control or compete for control of the drug trade but most exist to prove their credibility within Oz such as the Aryans or Latinos. McManus has a dream for every group to peacefully coexist but as it's prison, most if not all groups are somehow or somewhat warring with each other.
