Priory Community School is a school in Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset, England. Priory Community School is an 11-16 Community School and Technology College. There are more than 1,180 students on roll.
[edit] Exam Results
According to the school's website, in 2006 the school celebrated a record set of GCSE results, with 58% of pupils achieving five A* to C grades - a 4% increase on the 2005 figure, and equal to the previous highest results in 2003. Under the government's new and much tougher measures of success at GCSE, schools are scored on the number of pupils attaining five A* to C grades including mathematics and English. This re-scoring has caused a number of schools, including Priory, to fall down the GCSE performance league tables [1]. Using the new measures the school achieved 33% [2], making it the worst performing school in North Somerset [3]. It should be noted however that the school's contextual value add (CVA) remains high.
[edit] History and Information
The school was founded in huts on the car park of Worle School in September 1975, and moved to a purpose-built site during autumn 1977. During the 1980s, the school ran an unusual timetable, blocking an entire half-year to take the same subject at the same time. This allowed both setting and mixed-ability teaching in the same subject. This timetable management was the subject of an Open University module and television programme [4].
Priory gained technology college status in 1998. During 2006, a £6 million extension and refurbishment scheme saw the school move into a new main block, secure a humanities block extension, and a new sixth form block.
Priory pupil Alex Bethell made the televised national final of Hard Spell 2005; the BBC filmed him and other pupils in school.
