Proserpine, Queensland

Proserpine is a town situated on the Bruce Highway in the state of Queensland, Australia. The town's economy revolves mostly around sugar and tourism. Proserpine is the administrative centre of the Whitsunday Shire Council local government area that also incorporates the Whitsunday Islands and Airlie Beach.
Early settlers established the town in the 1880s and named it after the ancient Greek goddess Persephone (Latin: Proserpina).

Often skipped by tourists on their way to the Great Barrier Reef, this town receives little tourism. Originally founded on gold fields it's current centre of industy is cane farming.

Growth is starting to pick up and the town has much potential.

Approx. 4,500. A new sub-division is being built at the Junction of Renwicks Rd and Dudley St and stage 1 is or is about to be sold out! There could be a stage two planned in early 2008.
