Proton GEN-2 is a car made by Proton launched in the third quarter of 2004. It is based on the same platform as the Proton Waja.
Codenamed WRM (WRM stands for Wira Replacement Model). It is the first Proton model to use the very first Malaysian-own developed engine, invented by Proton and Lotus engineering team: The 1.6 litre CamPro Engine. The engine is alleged to be sluggish at low revs but Proton claimed that the peak power and torque is well above the 1.6 engines used in other cars. However, later in 2005 the ECU was remapped back to raise the low-end torque, but the maximum power and torque remained unchanged. Lotus Cars which is owned by Proton was instrumental in the development of the car which is evident in the car's ride and handling capability. In Malaysia, the car is rivalled by Hyundai Accent (Verna) and Kia Rio (Pride).
In 2005, a lower-spec version of Proton Gen-2 powered by 1.3L Campro engine was made available in Malaysia with automatic transmission option only.
In 2007, Proton and Lotus announced their hybrid concept version of the Gen-2 (known as Proton Gen-2 EVE Hybrid), which will be revealed during the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.

Race • Rally • Research (R3) unveiled the prototype concept of the eagerly anticipated Gen.2 R3 at the Dreamcars Asia Motorshow 2005 at JULY 07, 2005. The close to production concept was developed to gauge public response to its styling and performance.
The limited edition track day special was developed with much of the same principles and ideologies as the highly acclaimed Satria R3 but is designed to cater to a totally different market segment. The Gen.2 R3 is expected to appeal to young executives who’ve just settled down with one or two children.

[edit] Proton Gen-2 EVE Hybrid Concept
Recently, Proton and Lotus will be revealing the concept model of the hybrid version of the Proton Gen-2 for the 2007 Geneva Motor Show on 8 to 18 March 2007. The hybrid concept is codenamed as EVE (Efficient, Variable, Environmental). The concept model will retain the same Campro engine as the main powerplant coupled together with an electric motor system to form the hybrid powerplant.

The Proton GEN-2 was one of two models (the other being the Proton Savvy) that MG Rover was looking to rebadge when it entered talks with Proton's parent company in the mid 2000s. Both Auto Express and Autocar published shots of the car with a digitally recreated Rover grill.
