The Provinces of Sri Lanka (Sinhala: පලාත්, sing. පලාත) have existed since 1987, following several decades of increasing demand for a decentralization of the Government of Sri Lanka[1]. Prior to 1987, all administration was handled by a district-based civil service which had been in place since colonial times.[citation needed]
Officially[1], Sri Lanka has nine provinces, seven of which have had provincial councils from the start:[1]
- Central (Capital: Kandy, 3 Districts)
- Eastern (Capital: Trincomalee, 3 Districts)
- North Central (Capital: Anuradhapura, 2 Districts)
- North Western (Capital: Kurunegala, 2 Districts)
- Northern (Capital: Jaffna, 4 Districts)
- Sabaragamuwa (Capital: Ratnapura, 2 Districts)
- Southern (Capital: Galle, 3 Districts)
- Uva (Capital: Badulla, 2 Districts)
- Western (Capital: Colombo, 3 Districts)
