[edit] Connections to Indian culture
Arundati, I think the claim to connection to indian culture is a bit POV. If Beck believes it to occur in the Harappan civilization, it is an opinion and should not form the basis of the first sentence of the article. (BTW, I am interested in how he concluded that with physical evidence since most of harrappan code is undeciphered) In the history section as well, I see no basis in the first sentence - the Yajur veda is written history. Also I could not find the verse that Beck is basing his statement on. It would be of interest to the page, otherwise it just an opinion again (I find from personal experience that many verses are deliberatley mistranslated using selective meanings of some of the words). Also I object to it being categorized as Indian culture - the devadasi system may be pointed to, but then it is not clear what the origins and intent of it are. Prostitution is also not unique to india and has existed in societies around the world. --Pranathi 21:38, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- You are free to edit the article as you see fit, Pranathi. As far as I know, prostitution is not only Indian culture, but pretty much every culture in the world, but to deny that it exists and has an influence on the nation is like denying that Indian cinema exists or has any influence. Maybe only Americans and Japanese have this problem. Since you seem to be an authority in this area, the article is yours. (Arundhati Bakshi (talk • contribs)) 22:39, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

- It is part of Indian society as any society (not culture) in the world, but because it is not unique to India, I am removing the categorization. I am not an authority on this but I will try to edit appropriately. Looking forward to collaboration with you on this page.--Pranathi 22:45, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
