Public transport in Stockholm
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Public transport in Stockholm consists of bus, metro, regional/suburban rail, light rail, tram and archipelago boat operation in Stockholm County, Sweden. The bus and rail is organized by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (Greater Stockholm Public Transport) [1], SL, which is owned by the Stockholm County Council. The operation and maintenance of the public transport systems are delegated by SL to several contractors. The boat traffic is handled by Waxholmsbolaget [2].
The airport rapid public transport systems are handled separately though, with Flygbussarna [3] providing airport bus services, and Arlanda Express [4] an airport train service.

[edit] Bus
There are a vast amount of bus lines in Stockholm County. There are mainly four different kinds of bus lines.
- Inner-city blue bus lines
- Suburban blue bus lines
- Regular bus lines
- Service bus lines
The blue bus lines are trunk lines, in the inner city variant traversing large parts of the Stockholm inner city, and in the suburban variant acting as a main connection between the central parts of Stockholm and the suburbs. These are called blue bus lines because the busses that operate on them are painted blue, in contrast to the red color of the regular buses. The service bus lines are especially adapted for elderly people, and are found in several residential areas. Along some stretches of these lines instead of regular bus stops there are areas where one can halt the bus just by waving at them.
[edit] Metro
The Stockholm Metro consists of three groups of lines, which are each referred to as a singular line.
Name | Lines | Stretch | Length | Stations |
---|---|---|---|---|
Blue line | 10, 11 | Kungsträdgården – Hjulsta/Akalla | 25.5 km | 20 |
Red line | 13, 14 | Norsborg/Fruängen – Ropsten/Mörby centrum | 41.2 km | 36 |
Green line | 17, 18, 19 | Åkeshov/Alvik/Hässelby strand – Skarpnäck/Farsta strand/Hagsätra | 41.3 km | 49 |
[edit] Regional and suburban rail
There are three regional/suburban rail systems. Roslagsbanan uses a 891 mm narrow gauge, the others use standard gauge.
Name | Lines | Stretch | Length | Stations |
---|---|---|---|---|
Saltsjöbanan | 25, 26 | Slussen – Saltsjöbaden/Solsidan | 18.5 km | 18 |
Roslagsbanan | 27, 28, 29 | Stockholms östra – Näsbypark/Österskär/Kårsta | 65.0 km | 39 |
Commuter rail (Pendeltåg) | 35, 36, 37 | Bålsta/Märsta – Nynäshamn/Södertälje/Gnesta | ≈ 200 km | 51 |
[edit] Light rail
There are three light rail systems in Stockholm. They can in some regard be considered trams since some of them have a history of being tram lines or having used or still are using tram cars, but the rail system of them are much closer to a regular railway than a city tram, and they all go most of their stretches on dedicated railway and embankment. Therefore it is more accurate to regard them as light rail.
Name | Line | Stretch | Length | Stations |
---|---|---|---|---|
Nockebybanan | 12 | Nockeby – Alvik | 5.7 km | 10 |
Lidingöbanan | 21 | Ropsten – Gåshaga brygga | 9.2 km | 14 |
Tvärbanan | 22 | Sickla udde – Alvik | 11.5 km | 17 |
[edit] Tram
There is one heritage tram line operational. The infrastructure is owned by SL, but the cars are owned and operated by the Swedish Tramway Society [5]. The SL travelcards are valid on it, but SL coupons are not.
Name | Line | Stretch | Length | Stations |
---|---|---|---|---|
Djurgården line | 7 | Norrmalmstorg – Waldemarsudde/Bellmansro | 2.9 km | 10 |
[edit] Boat
There are several archipelago boat lines in Stockholm County, and some of them operate year around.
One boat line, Djurgården ferry line (Djurgårdsfärjan), goes in central Stockholm, between Slussen and Djurgården. The SL travelcards are valid on that one, but not the SL coupons.
[edit] Airport transport
The rapid public transport to and from the airports in Stockholm are handled a bit separately than the regular land based public transport as handled by SL, thus they have their own tickets and pricing structure. It is also possible to take regular public transport from the airports, but that typically means one has to change between some buses or trains and it takes more time.
[edit] Arlanda Express
Arlanda Express provides an airport rail link service to and from the Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.
The typical ticket price between Stockholm and Arlanda Airport for an adult is 200 SEK, and the trip takes 20 minutes.
[edit] Flygbussarna
Flygbussarna provides airport bus service to and from all three airports associated with Stockholm: Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, Stockholm-Bromma Airport and Stockholm-Skavsta Airport.
The ticket price between Stockhom and Arlanda Airport for an adult is 89 SEK, and the trip takes 40 minutes.
[edit] Tickets
[edit] SL's tickets
SL has two main forms of tickets, both allow for unlimited travel in all SL public transport in the entire Stockholm County for the duration of their validity.
- Travel card — valid during the on it specified period of time, from 24 hours up to a year depending on the card
- Single ticket — valid during one hour after the start of the trip
With the single tickets if you change to another SL public transport you may do so with the same ticket as long as the next part of the trip begins within an hour from the time that is stamped on the ticket.
[edit] Reintroduction of the zone system
A zone system will be reintroduced on April 1, 2007. The new zone system consists of three zones, named A, B and C, compared to the old zone system of zones 1–5. The entire Metro system will be located inside zone A.[6] The changes to the ticket system includes that the single tickets will cease to be sold — any previously bought single tickets will still remain valid — and coupons reintroduced and one won't be able to purchase a ticket on the buses anymore.[7][8]
Number of zones travelled in | Number of coupons required | Number of single tickets required |
---|---|---|
1 | 2 | 1 |
2 | 3 | 2 |
3 | 4 | 3 |
Across the Stockholm County border | One additional coupon | One additional single ticket |
[edit] SL's ticket prices
The prices for the most common tickets are the following.[9] The reduced price is for persons under the age of 20, or over the age of 65.
Ticket name | Full price | Reduced price |
---|---|---|
Single ticket, purchased in transport | 40 SEK | 20 SEK |
Single ticket, purchased at an SL reseller | 20 SEK | 10 SEK |
SMS single ticket | 26 SEK | 16 SEK |
10 prepaid single tickets | 180 SEK | 90 SEK |
1-day / 24-hour card | 60 SEK | 30 SEK |
3-day / 72-hour card | 180 SEK | 90 SEK |
7-day card | 220 SEK | 130 SEK |
30-day card | 600 SEK | 360 SEK |
Season card, May–August | 1,730 SEK | 1,040 SEK |
Season card, January–April, or September–December | 2,330 SEK | 1,400 SEK |
Annual card, January–December | 6,390 SEK | 3,840 SEK |
The older strips with 10 or 20 prepaid coupons are still valid to use. Three coupons equals one single ticket.
The 1-day and 3-day cards are available in two variants, valid either from midnight of the day they are valid from, or 24 or 72 hours respectively from the moment they were purchased.
For travel across the Stockholm County border, e.g. with the commuter train to Bålsta or Gnesta, an additional single ticket is required, in the case of Bålsta even with the travel cards. There are special travel cards though that allow for travel to and from Bålsta without having to deal with the additional single tickets.
[edit] Waxholmsbolaget's tickets
With the Waxholmsbolaget archipelago boats the ticket structure is essentially
- Cash ticket paid on board, price dependent on trip length
- 30-day period cards
On the Djurgården ferry line (Djurgårdsfärjan) between Slussen and Djurgården, the SL travel cards are valid, but not the SL coupons.
[edit] Contractors
The contractors used by SL are, as of 2005
- Busslink
- Citypendeln
- Connex
- Roslagståg
- Swebus
- Tågia
