Puckeys Estate Reserve
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Puckey's Estate Reserve is a separate section (annexe) of the Wollongong Botanic Garden. It has a beautiful view of Fairy Meadow Beach and Stuart Park. It comprises a large array of non-native flora (which was intoduced by Mr. C.Puckey) and an extensive range of native fauna. Puckey's Estate was traditionally used by the Wadi Wadi people, the Aboriginal tribe in Wollongong. It has a long and interesting history, being land once owned by a Mr Courtney Puckey. Puckey first used it as an experimental saltworks. Over the years many have proposed changes to the area.
The area is also used by many people as a mid-afternoon recreation area.
The reserve is a major native reserve in the Illawarra region. It is mainly comprised of oak forest, but also has sand dune and rainforest/wetland attributes. It is next to a bike path and the Science Centre. The reserve is a popular local bushwalking area for hikers who live in Fairy Meadow. It is also used for education purposes; schools and community groups work there.
