Punjab gharānā

Punjab Gharana (sometimes called Punjabi or Panjabi Gharana), is a style and technique of tabla playing used in the Punjab region of India. Punjabi gharana is the only gharana (style) that is independent of Delhi gharana. The style was said to have been founded by Saddu Hussain Bux, but this is somewhat debated[citation needed].
The distinctive features of Punjab Gharana are:
(1) using the middle finger to sound special notes, and
(2) the chilla ritual, which consists of continuous playing for forty days until the player reaches the divine state of becoming a true Ustad (master), of the tabla technique.
The maestros of the Punjab gharana are Ustad Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain (musician), Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan, Ustad Tari Khan,Shyam Kane, Ustad Mian Mohammad Ajmal, Ashok Godbole and Anuradha Pal.
