The Purple Rose Theatre Company (or PRTC) was founded by Jeff Daniels in 1991. The main performance space and offices occupy a building in Chelsea, Michigan once owned by Daniels' grandfather. The theatre provides resources for training actors and playwrights residing in the Midwest region and developing plays based on life in the Great Lakes basin.
World premieres at 'The Rose' have included Escanaba in da Moonlight (1993) and its sequel Escanaba in Love (2006), both written by Jeff Daneils.
In the first quarter of 2007 the PRTC staged Frank D. Gilroy's post World War II play The Subject Was Roses.
