Ongole, a town in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, is the administrative headquarters of Prakasam District. The town has a population of 149,589 (agglomeration 152,945 (2001 census).
The town's history goes back to the era of the Mauryas, and Satavahanas who ruled most of present day Andhra Pradesh. A few inscriptions dating to the Satavahana period were found in a village called China Ganjam, near Ongole. After the Satavahanas, this place came into the limelight again during the Kakatiya dynasty. At that time the nearby towns of Motupalli and Voda Revu served as major seaports.
Ongole is famous for its Ongole breed of oxen which are considered virile and of superior stock. They are one of the major Zebu cattle breeds of the world.
There is a very old Lord Shiva temple in the town.
The name "Ongole" is derived from Omgole, roughly translated as submitting to Shiva.
Economy:
The commerce of Ongole largely started by agricultural families with in Prakasham district. Ongole is one of the major center for tobacco trading in Andhra Pradesh. During 70's and 80's many enterprises were setup in small scale manufacturing like Shoes, Paints, PVC, pharmaceuticals etc.But, majority of these had their run and did not survive their competitors from other parts of Andhra Pradesh or out of state. This despite the fact that some of these companies are early adopters/manufacturers of the products in the coastal districts of AP. One reason could be that capital/human resources availabilty as well as lack of business leadership availability for these enterpreneurs. 80's and 90's saw proliferation of Hospitals and Educational Institutions(Secondary School, Intermediate).Popular Telugu cinema actor Chiranjeevi completed his degree at one of the foremost colleges of Ongole, Sarma College. Later 90's saw the advent of Granite Industry. The availability of Black Galaxy granite nearby has resulted in the proliferation of granite mining, stone cutting and polishing unit companies around Ongole
