- locomotive hauled trains often have two drivers (or driver and observer)
- multiple unit trains generally have one driver only.
- type of signal? Semaphore or colour light?
- any ATC or AWS, etc?
- double or single line.
- junction?
- fog?
- are signals controlled by track circuits?
- diesel or electric traction.
- couplings - strong or weak?
- carriages - strong (steel) or weak (wooden)?

[edit] Answers
- aerial photo shows two tracks, which might not be two mainline tracks of a double track line.
- aerial photo shows no overhead wires, so train probably diesel powered, which is consistant with reported fire (from diesel fuel?)
- train reported to have concertinaed (aka telescoped). Telescoping less likely with strong couplings.
- reports of "light" signals would increase likelyhood of track circuits, a device particular good at reducing likely of collisions.
- burst into flames imples diesel trains with flammable diesel fuel.
