Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) |
Recorded in 1979 and released by Japan in February 1980, this album was a huge departure for the band musically and is generally considered as the very first New Romantic album (even though Japan distanced themselves from the New-Rom scene). Their previous two albums had been more in the vein of alternative glam rock, as opposed to their new New Wave leanings. They may have lost some fans, but they gained many more as this was their most popular album to date. As of today, the general consensus among fans is that this is Japan's best album, rivaled only by Tin Drum, which is more favoured by critics.
The album is also notable for being the first album where singer David Sylvian used his newfound more svelte, mature and subtle baritone vocal style, which later became one of the bands most distinctive hallmarks.
The title track, Quiet Life will be featured as part of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories soundtrack in Wave 103 which also features other New Romantic and New Wave artists. This track was also a Top 20 hit for Japan in 1981.
