Ralph Herseth

Ralph Herseth (July 2, 1909 – July 24, 1969) was the twenty-first Governor of South Dakota from 1959 to 1961. Herseth was only the third Democrat to hold that office.
Herseth was born in Houghton, South Dakota. He attended Northern State Teachers College and North Dakota State College. He was married to Lorna Herseth and lived on a ranch near Houghton. Lorna later became the state's Secretary of State. His son Lars Herseth was Majority Leader of the State Senate, and since 2004 his granddaughter Stephanie Herseth Sandlin has served in the U.S. House of Representatives.
