Ray Barnett is a fictional doctor portrayed by actor Shane West on the television show ER. His character first appeared in fall 2004 at the start of the 11th season. He is a talented doctor but has struggled with conflicting commitments to the medical profession and his life as a rock musician.
In episode "If Not Now", Ray's band received an offer to go on a tour. Ray requested time off which was eventually granted but his band members rejected him as they felt he was too committed to his job at the hospital.
In season 12, his character became romantically involved with roommate and colleague Neela Rasgotra. His feelings for her created tension between the two as Neela was at the time married to Dr. Michael Gallant, who was away fighting in the Iraq War. Ray and Neela have remained friends and since Gallant's death in Iraq, Ray has attempted to become closer to Neela. This attempt at closeness has, so far, proved to be unsuccessful and has also been impacted by the arrival of new character Tony Gates (played by John Stamos). Although nothing has ever happened between the two of them since Tony discovering he might be a father (to a now orpahned child - Sarah) Neela is relying more and more on Ray. Ray has not kept his feelings for Neela a secret and is proving to be more what you would expect in a partner to Neela, opposed to the unpredictable Tony Gates.
